Symptomatic relief: If he has a virus, antibiotics will be of no use. Help him feel better while he fights it- may take 7-10 days. Give small amounts of clear liquids frequently. Light foods- crackers, toast, etc. Use saline rinse in his nose to loosen the mucous. Most cough/cold meds are not recommended for kids under 4 anymore. Tylenol (acetaminophen) or Ibuprofen for fever (not both!). See doctor if not better. ...Read more

? irritants?: The first months are troubled by narrow nasal passages & exposure to dust, fragrences, smoke & other irritants. Baby tries to flush these out of the nose with mucous but this often ends as congestion & produces rattling with breathing. The best rx is washing out the nose with saline & suctioning the remainder. Peds Sinusitis: Sounds like a pretty unhappy child, sorry about that. Lots of meds, too. We usually try to manage pediatric sinusitis with medications, like antibiotics and steroids. Can also use saline irrigation or spray in the nose. Further, a landmark study has shown that many children suffer from reflux and by treating, they often can get their sinusitis better. Consider reflux treatment and add saline. ...Read more

Serum iron is a bit low doctor given me 200mg ferrous sulphate 2x per day. Equivalent to 65mg per pill. Seems a lot of iron? Scared to take it.

Serum iron is a bit low doctor given me 200mg ferrous sulphate 2x per day. Equivalent to 65mg per pill. Seems a lot of iron? Scared to take it.

It is not a lot: The stated dosage given 2x/day is typical and not considered high/much. Many use 3x/day but can't take because of constipation issue. Anemia is more common in menstruating females because of their monthly loss. So, iron deficiency in 22 old guy is a bit unusual. I would discuss/ask doc as to why you have this problem at your age. Nevertheless, 2x/day is not high. Consult doc. Good luck. ...Read more

Hypertension: Best way to determine appropriate dose and/or combination of blood pressure lowering medications is to monitor your BP regularly. Use bicep cuff, not wrist device. Rest 5-10min before measuring. Wait another 5min then measure again. Goal BP in elderly is usually <150/90. In some circumstances, goal <140/90. Chat w/your doc to determine your goal & adjust dose/regimen. Don't forget cholesterol too. ...Read more

I have read that taking a certain dosage of normal contraceptive pill eg yasmin (drospirenone and ethinyl estradiol) cud be the equivalent of the emergency pill. Is this true?
