If a women is breastfeeding and does not get her period is she pregnant?

Not usually: Typically a woman who is breastfeeding does not ovulate for several months she therefore will not have a period. Stopped breastfeeding 6 mo old & had what I thought was period. It lasted 2 days 48 days ago. No period again, neg pregnancy tests. Can I get preg?

Probably yes.: It can take up to 2 years for normal hormone levels to return to normal. Lactation does affect ability to get pregnant and the use of prolonged breastfeeding is an acceptable way to try to prevent subsequent pregnancies. Levels have to be normal usually to sustain pregnancy. If trying to get pregnant, I would discuss with your OB-GYN. ...Read more

Yes: You can get pregnant while breastfeeding - i can have you meet my second child - a product of just that ( and by the way, he's a great man now). However, your ovulation is much more sporadic, so knowing when you are fertile and ovulating is much more difficult to determine and you usually don't ovulate as often, so it may take longer to get pregnant while still nursing. ...Read more

Prolactin and cycle.: When you breast feed, the hormone prolactin is secreted by the pituitary glad to aid in milk let down for the baby. Prolactin causes the secretion of fsh and lh by the pituitary to be suppressed, so the ovaries may respond with no or irregular cycles. You may begin to ovulate and cycle by 6 to 9 months postpartum, so some people get pregnant breast feeding. Hope this helps! ...Read more

No period a year after birth. not breastfeeding nor pregnant. is that normal?

Not normal: Studies show that most nonlactating women will not ovulate until 6 weeks postpartum. 70% have had return of ovulation by 12 weeks.
