Infection: Deep abrasion vs. Laceration? If it is oozing it is either infection or should have been sutured or glued closed. Infections can spread very rapidly through tissue planes around the face and eye, and oral antibiotics might be indicated. Topical otc antibiotics could also be tried. Non-healing wound: How long have you had it? Since it is draining, was it Ever cultured .and you probably had antibiotics ? Do you have high blood pressure? Did you injure it? The best thing for you to do is to see your PCP . I think You need blood tests , cultures of the wound , possibly MRI to rule out osteomyelitis. Wound: Yes, you can. The signs of infection - pain, drainage, usually milky white, green or yellow, swelling which is worsening, redness which is worsening or not getting better. If none of those are present, yes, you can go ahead and put an antibiotic ointment and either let it air dry or cover with a dressing (bandade). Cut on leg, used bandage. Red raised area noted, removed bandage. 3 weeks since injury and area of 'cracking' skin surrounding wound. Not warm to touch or weepy, just won't heal and getting slowly larger. Tried hydrocortisone cream but no improvement?
