Why Would My Doctor Prescribe Prednisone And Antibiotics For Bronchitis
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
Doctor for a couple of months I have had to take prednisone, and some antibiotic, for bronchitis, and severe allergy's, symptoms, some wheezing, mucus?
My doctor prescribed prednisone to me for my bronchitis. What does it do specifically to aid in getting over the bronchitis?
Fights inflammation: Prednisone is a strong anti-inflammatory medication. Perhaps you have had some narrowing of your bronchial tubes - and maybe some wheezing. Prednisone may help these symptoms. Prednisone is usually taken for a brief period of time, though. Taking it for long periods may increase your risk for diabetes, obesity, and bone thinning. But taken for a brief period may help your symptoms greatly. ...Read more

Its for your PAIN: Tylenol (acetaminophen) #4 is an Opiate Analgesic like Vicodin Used for PAIN. It contains 60mg of codeine and 300mg of Tylenol (acetaminophen). I hv bronchiti I am on antibiotic & prednisone since wed. I still wheezing & cough occastionaly. Is ok 2 c 3yr old who just hd bronchitis 2 wk ago?
Yes: Although bronchitis is generally caused by a virus and therefore not helped by antibiotics, you should be fine. The reason antibiotics are sometimes prescribed is that as we get older, we are at increased risk for secondary infections, like pneumonia. Since the 3 year old just had bronchitis, his/her immune system should be in full gear. Have fun! ...Read more
My doctor has me on a prednisone (20 mg) schedule of 3-3-2-2-1-1. Is this a standard-sufficient dosage when recovering from a bout of bronchitis?
Will using mucinex (guaifenesin) dm help with bronchitis and asthma was prescribe prednisone 20mg ariythomicin 250mg for 7 days om gor 4 daytake pro air and advair?
Doubtful: The "active" ingredient in Mucinex (guaifenesin) is guaiafenisin. It has been hawked by drug huxters as an expectorant for for over 50 years-- something wonderful for loosening up phlegm so you can cough it up from your congested lungs. When the AMA Drug Evaluations was published in 1980, pharm companies were aghast, because it evaluated which drugs worked best. This one was "at least as good as a placebo". ...Read more
Remedies for a deep congested cough? Went to doctor, had chest X-ray and it was normal. Dr said bad bronchitis. 20mg of prednisone & advair. What else can I do to get rid of this cough?!?!
Cough: If the medications your doctor gave you do help cure the cough, consider other causes for the cough. One of these is gastrointestinal reflux disease (gerd). Gerd can be present without symptoms of heart burn. Speak to your physician (p) about the possibility of your having gerd and your p may consider putting you on a proton pump inhibitor to see if that stops your coughing. Good luck. ...Read more
How can I get tested for an allergy if I can't be off prednisone long enough to have my system clear out? I recently got bronchitis. Doc put me on tessalon & an azmacort inhaler. The next day, I had hives. The next day, worse. Next day hives & swollen lips
No need: What you are describing is not necessarily an allergy. Some individuals develop hives when they acquire a viral infection. Allergy testing is of no value in this case. You can always have a rast blood test, which is inferior to the skin test, but I still do not see the need for it in your case. The hives should subside once the infection resolves. ...Read more
My doctor prescribe prednisone for my hives for a week. It didn't go away, its been 5months & I'm still taking anti histamine so it won't appear everyday?
Common: That's common with chronic urticaria, prednisone was to control a flare up, and not to eradicate it altogether, you still have to be on daily antihistamines to control the chronic condition, better see an allergist / dermatologist if you haven't done so already, check aaaai. Org or acaai. Org for an allergist in your area, good luck ...Read more
Not usually used: Most infections are not treated with steroids since many times steroids can make infections worse. On rare occassions, steroid nose sprays are used in the treatment of sinus infections. In rare brain or CNS inections, steroids can be of benefit. I'm having p.rosea right now almost 10weeks. And my doctors prescribe me a prednisone and im taking it almost a month. Does prednisone safe in my case?
Maybe, maybe not: Almost all medicines have potential adverse effects. The art of medicine is balancing those against their potential benefit. My husband is already on an antibiotic and Prednisone for strep throat. Now his eyes are red. Should he go back to a doctor? Or is this common?
Yes he should return:
Was he tested for strep infection? I wonder if he could have a viral infection that affects the throat and the eyes. It is unclear if the redness is due to inflammation of the conjunctiva or bleeding into the conjunctiva, any eye discharge etc. At any rate he should return to the MD for re-evaluation. Take care.

URI contagious: If you have a viral upper respiratory infection, two - three days. If you have a bacterial respiratory infection, which may follow the viral uri, generally this is not contagious. I was prescribed Zpak, Prednisone, and Acetaminophen/Codeine syrup for Bronchitis. Should this be helpful?
The ZPak is a good broad spectrum antibiotic and Prednisone will treat inflammation, particularly if you had wheezing on exam.
The cough syrup combined with Tylenol (acetaminophen) can help with fever and cough. I usually advise using Tylenol (acetaminophen) only for fever and a cough preparation only if you need it to sleep.
Most bronchial infections though are viral and not treated with antibiotics. ...Read more
