Why Take Immunosuppressant With Humira
Your immune system is comprised of two main compartments: innate and specific branches. There are many different cell types in each group including neutrophils, eosinophils, macrophages, basophils, t cells and b cells, and others. Anything that affects either the total number of those cells or their function can be considering immune ...Read more
Dx:ra. Enbrel (etanercept) not effective after 6 mo. Humira 2x mo prescribed. Liver can not tolerate mtx. What medication can replace mtx to make humira work best?
Humira losing its effectiveness with RA. Unable to tolerate MTX or Plaquenil. Any Rheumotologists think Remicade (infliximab) would be a good option?
Can't hurt to try: I'm a family doctor, not a rheumatologist, but I do have RA patients who are on Remicaid who are responding very well with it. I don't know what that's worth to you, but I thought I would share. I think it's being used a lot more and does have FDA indication for RA. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Saw rheumy. Today.Gave me arava (leflunomide) 20mg+methotrexate 25mg+enbrel for psoriasis/psor.Arthritis.Is it safe, r all 3 used frequently/sometimes, opinion please ?
Psoriatic Arthritis: Methotrexate (trexall) is the most common dmard used to treat psoriatic arthritis. However, it has potentially serious side effects, including lung, kidney and liver problems. Using Arava and Methotrexate together my increase the risk of hepatotoxicity & leukopenia.I would just use a biologic like Remicade or Humira or Enbrel or stelara (ustekinumab) which should control your disease but this is my opinion. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
How effective is imuran (azathioprine) for lupus or sjogrens? Methotrexate worked great for me but can't tolerate GI side effects even with injection.
Rheumatoid arthritis for 7 yrs. On methotrexate & prednisone. Tried so many drugs (orencia, enbrel, (etanercept) humira...). Feeling defeated. What else can I try?
Other choices: Some older drugs such as Plaquenil may help, especially with fatigue. There are also newer drugs that act via different mechanisms such as actemra (tocilizumab). I assume the diagnosis of RA is definite. If not, retest other possibilities. An exercise program may be very beneficial, especially if you start slowly and build up with hurting yourself. Don't give up hope. You can get better. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Good experience: Rituxan (rituximab) has been used in rheumatoid arthritis and it has demonsrated good response-in my experience. Jus like anything else, there are some possible side effects from Rituxan (rituximab) but majority are very tolerable. You need to be screened for hepatitis b - prior to Rituxan (rituximab) administration.-as Rituxan (rituximab) can cause hep b exacerbation. ...Read more
I have Crohn's disease & take cimzia (certolizumab pegol) injectables. It isnt taking care of all my symptoms. Is there another class of drug I can add with the cimzia (certolizumab pegol)?
6MP , MTX: The medications that can be used with Cimzia (certolizumab pegol) most commonly include 6mp - azathiorine or Methotrexate (in addition to Mesalamine / steroids). Natalizumab is an other biologic that can be used in those where anti-tnfs (like cimzia) fail, but they are not used together. ...Read more
Herbal unknown: Many drugs can interfere with immunosuppressive drugs metabolism and levels. Moringa oleifera is a nutritional supplement that is most like a multivitamin of sorts although it contains a large amount of potassium and phosphorus and protein. It would not be advised to take if someone has chronic kidney disease. It's effects on immunosuppressive medication is not clearly known. ...Read more
Better to be on methotrexate and hydroxychloroquine or methotrexate and a biologic when treating jra? Methotrexate only doesn't help
Depends on severity: Since you have already been on Methotrexate and its not helping you get complete relief from symptoms, further addition of therapies will depend on severity of your current symptoms. Hydroxychloroquine is milder in efficacy as compared to biologics & both have different side effect profiles. Talk to a rheumatologist who can assess your clinical course & treatment needs & then advise accordingly. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Methotrexate injections and pills didn't work for scleritis and was wondering if remicade (infliximab) is good medicine for the scletitis?
Resistant scleritis: Initial therapy always requires systemic nsaids, glucocorticoids, or other immunosuppressives (rituximab & cyclophosphamide). Cyclosporine & mycophenolate may also work. Azathioprine or mtx may be most beneficial for maintenance. Tnf Alpha inhibitors (eg infliximab) may be effective in resistant disease. Scleritis should ideally be managed by ophthalmologist+rheumatologist experts. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I'm using plaquenil (hydroxychloroquine) 200mg and prednisone 10mg for rheumatoid arthritis, can I take vitamin C while using these medications.
Yes: Vitamin c is fine to take while taking these medications. Not sure why you would take it, though. Recent studies have shown that your food should provide you with enough vitamins so if your food is inadequate, dietary modifications are necessary to get it where it should be. ...Read moreSee 2 more doctor answers
Trying to boost my immune system. Can i take echinacea or astragalus while on humira (adalimumab) for as?
I take humira (adalimumab) for Crohn's disease. I also take melatonin to sleep and read melatonin may affect the humira (adalimumab). Should I be concerned?
I have RA use plaquenil, (hydroxychloroquine) now i was prescribed methotrexate. 2y ago diagnosis with HPV 16, can I take metho a immunosuppressant, an not make worst the hpv?
Yes: This is a great question. Methotrexate has been used both to treat hpv and certain studies have shown women with RA on methtrexate have higher risk of abnormal pap smear. It is safe to use Methotrexate if you need it for ra. You just need to get your pap smears yearly and more frequent if abnormal. I would also recommend hpv testing with your pap. ...Read more
Yes.: My colleagues believe it is the first choice (acr and eular), but while I use it as a second or third drug, the benefit/risk ratio is incredibly good. Methotrexate has little or no justification to be taken orally though. Unpredictable absorption, stomach concenbration build up, and going to the liver on first-pass! the liver sees 600x the ultimate concentration in the blood. ...Read more
