My newborn(13 days old) is always hungry, would it be ok to start bottle feeding and keep breastfeed?
Be patient : Newborns are wired to suckle 24/7 as a reflex. Try not to confuse the reflex with hunger. If baby has just eaten, the stomach is not sending that message, but baby may accept a feed for comfort if offered. Breast fed stomachs can empty every 2 hours, formula taked longer. Relative issue: Breast fed infants, even if breast fed for a few weeks, seem to have better life outcomes than those started on the bottle initially.There are also living immune factors that breast milk has that reduce some of babies illnesses.That said, there has been tremendous improvements in formulas in the past 3 decades and babies thrive. Depends on the child: Some kids need more nurturing than others and will seek out the cuddle time at the breast well into the 2nd yr. If your infant needs cuddle time, do as long as desired. When kids start to walk, they may loose interest in cuddle time. When you have to chase them down to bf its time to quit. Various opinions: Some believe nipple confusion is the main problem switching back and forth in feeding method. Babies have to put a little more work into getting the milk to drop down from the breast vs suckling a bottle.
