The kidneys are paired organs that lie on either side of the vertebral column. Part of their critical functions include the excretion of urine and removal of nitrogenous wastes products from the blood. They regulate acid-base, electrolyte, fluid balance and blood pressure. Through hormonal signals, the kidneys control the ...Read more

I've always blushed badly in social situations and for 5yrs been on Zoloft (sertraline) which seemed to help at first but now seems worse than ever. What can I do?
Behavioral treatment: Medication can only help so much. There are various treatments that can help with social anxiety, such as cbt, energy psychology, emdr, and other exposure and desensitization approaches. Treatment can also involve targeting the beliefs that interfer with social functioning, such as feeling that you're not good enough or that you are in someway flawed. ...Read more
Dr. Pappas! So are you saying Zoloft (sertraline) causes dizziness in less than 10% of people or more than 10% of people? And is it really bad dizziness? Spinning?
Zoloft (sertraline): Pre-marketing studies of zoloft (sertraline) (another source) showed 12% of people had "dizziness" (not characterized further as "vertigo" or "spinning, " etc). The source I first quoted said more than 10%, which is close to this 12% figure. These figures would also leave ~90% of people who did not experience dizziness. If ~12% of patients in pre-marketing studies had dizziness, 88% did not. Big majority. ...Read more

Zoloft (sertraline) can inhibit the production of saliva, thus the dry mouth. The natural tendency to drink water can dry the mouth out further. Suck on a sugar-free hard candy or chew sugar-free gum to stimulate mucous production. Use a special otc mouthwash for dry mouth. ...Read more

Would side effects be present with increasing Zoloft (sertraline) dosage of 25 to 50mg? Although no bad side effects when taking 25mg, but many with 50mg.
In my practice, I start most adults on zoloft (sertraline) at 50 mgs daily, and they do well. I then have them increase the dose to 100 - 200 mgs gradually, so they can be at a therapeutic dose.

Can I safely take 400mgs of zoloft (sertraline). I'm currently taking 200 - 300 mgs daily. My depression varies and today its bad?
Please don't up your: Dose dependent on how you feel one day. It takes quite a while for serotonin levels to increase - so upping your dose for a day will not make symptoms better. 400 mg of zoloft (sertraline) is well above the recommended dosage. You need to discuss this with your psychiatrist/ physician. See that you drink socially - that is definitely contraindicated if you take zoloft (sertraline). ...Read more
I'm on 100mg zoloft (sertraline). I don't feel depressed anymore unless its a bad day, but I still worry constantly. What can I do? .
See a psychiatrist: Though ssris like zoloft (sertraline) can help some with anxiety (in addition to depression), some anxiety doesn't respond. The options include (1) switching medication, (2) adding an anti-anxiety medication, (3) starting psychotherapy for anxiety/depression (e.g. Cbt), (4) or all of the above. I'd suggest getting a referral to psychiatry to discuss specifics of treatment options. ...Read more
