Why Is Tmj Worse At Night
I have TMJ but can't afford medical care for it. What should I do until I can? Would a night guard help or make it worse? Should I avoid hard foods?
A few things.: Depends on symptoms, and cause of symptoms. 3 signs of TMJ dysfunction: joint noises, joint pain & limited oral opening. Self treat with soft diet, jaw exercises, massage, heat/cold, OTC pain meds. A splint or physical therapy would be next. Occasionally muscle relaxants, biofeedback. Xrays are done for diagnosis. Surgery usually reserved for serious symptoms not responsive to other treatments. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Can you use Arnica for TMJ? I've had this for over 30 years. I'm getting another night guard by dentist. Right side is worse
TMJ: TMJ is usually caused by bruxism (chronic teeth grinding and/or clenching) or a bad bite. Effective treatment depends on how (grinding, clenching, or both), and when (nighttime, daytime, or both) you are bruxing, plus the condition of your bite. Pain will subside by elimination of trauma to the TMJ. See a dentist experienced in treating TMJ dysfunction (nightguard is only one aspect of treatment). ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

A professionally made bruxism splint should be fabricated out of acrylic or some other hard material to prevent additional chewing and clenching. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers

TMJ/TMD: It can get worse by just functions of the jaw- eating, chewing, yawning, singing, playing a musical instrument, trauma, yelling...Get the picture? Even a slight popping over the years can slowly develop into a locking or limitation of opening or trouble closing the jaw. Should I get surgery for tmj? The pain has gotten worse lately, but it’s still not usually too terrible. I’ve heard that sometimes surgery can cause worse problems than the tmj.
It depends: There are many factors to consider. Surgery for TMJ is extremely aggressive and invasive. I would exhaust other treatment options like an oral appliance to adjust jaw position or Botox injections to relive discomfort. Be certain you are seeing a prosthodontists and/or oral surgeon to explain your specific treatment options. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
