Went to the ER with a lot of blood in my diarrhea. They did a CT scan w/ contrast. There is mild diffuse wall thickening of the descending colon and parts of the sigmoid colon. Also noted was a umbilical hernia 1.3cm. What could cause the blood?

Inflammation: The findings you describe is what inflammation or infection may show up on a CT scan. There are may causes of these findings that could be cause abdominal pain, blood and mucous in the stool, and diarrhea for example. To complete the workup, you need a colonoscopy for possible biopsy and and the colon can be visualized. Treatment then can be started. I doubt the hernia is a significant problem

Many causes: Blood in diarrhea can be due to numerous causes. Some causes are due to types of infections in the colon, other causes can include inflammatory bowel disease or perhaps bleeding somewhere in the GI tract. This finding requires a thorough medical evaluation to help narrow down the causes and determine further diagnostic testing and treatment regimen.

Male, diarrhea hard recently. Sometimes there is blood in it. Help?

Sure, but...: Need diagnosis first. "Cure" depends on if simply just hemorrhoids/fissure or something serious. Have you been straining at stool, have rectal dysfunction, perform an activity that increases pelvic engorgement with blood or increases pelvic pressure (heavy lifting, prolonged sitting, etc.)? History of colitis, infection, rectal/anal trauma or high risk? Best to get checked--don't delay please.

I had frequent diarrhea with medium amounts of blood in it today. Other than the diarrhea, I feel ok. What could this be? Do I need urgent attention?

Bloody diarrhea: Anytime you have prolonged episodes of bloody diarrhea you should be evaluated. You may have a simple hemorrhoid that is causing your problem, but as mentioned see a doctor.

Can diarrhea lower blood sugar?

It can if: It decreases your food absorption and you are taking Insulin or diabetes medication, but the infection or whatever caused the diarrhea can also elevate glucose more commonly. Neither is a significant change unless you are on medication for diabetes. If so, check w/your doctor.

I've had diarrhea for a day and now it's just mucus and blood...what is causing this? How do I treat it?

See gi doc: You may need to have a colonoscopy to determine if there is any colitis. At the minimum you should have stool tested for infections and inflammation markers. Hope this helps.

My 7 year old has diarrhea now for 5 days and now there's blood in his diarrhea. He is drinks fluids and seems ok.

Blood is not ok: Sounds like you should take your little guy in for an office visit. Could just be blood from his buttocks getting inflamed from wiping a lot, but if the blood is really in the poop, he probably should have some stool tests done. There are only a few diarrheal illnesses that tend to cause blood in the stool. Get him checked.

Acute gastroenteritis: Is the most likely cause of an acute episode of diarrhea, which improves over several days. If your stool is getting more close to normal, then I would continue to drink lots of liquids. Consider the use of Immodium to slow down the frequency of your stools. If you have bleeding, fever, or worsening of your symptoms, see your doctor. Good luck.

Gastroenterology: You need an immediate referral to a Gastroenterologist to rule out colitis. In addition, blood in the stool needs urgent evaluation each time. If you loose too much through your stool, you can become anemic. You need screening for colon cancer, colitis, proctitis, and diseases such as Ulcerative Colitis, Chrons Disease, and if you eat spinach/get fever/chills Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome. See MD
