Why Is My Scalp Tender To Touch
Why is one part of my scalp tender to touch? Only a light touch hurts if, not a pressing one so I think it's only my scalp that's affected
Shingles?: If this is new (a day or two), and if the tender area is only on one side of your scalp (i.e. tenderness stops at the midline and doesn't extend to the other side), be on the alert for red bumps that would soon turn to blisters and sores. It could be shingles, i.e. a localized recurrence of the chickenpox virus (if you weren't vaccinated and had chickenpox as a child.) See MD if any doubt. ...Read more

Doctor can evaluate: A dermatology doctor can evaluate the scalp to see if there is a problem in the scalp skin. The cause could also be a problem in the nerve (s) that go to the skin, leading to pain sensations when the area is touched. In certain blood vessel disorders, there is inflammation in some vessels, which can be in the scalp. ...Read more
IT DEPENDS: Scalp that hurts could be due to an inflammatory process of the scalp due to diet, stress, hormonal imbalance, bacterial or fungal infection. Do you have redness of the scalp? Pimples? Oily scalp? Flaking? Crusting? Bleeding? There is something called temporal arteritis which is a diagnosis that we would not want to miss. Please see your physician for a physical exam and history. ...Read more
A part of my scalp hurts whenever I touch it very slightly. Like a tenderness. What is it and is this something bad?
Need more info: Hypersensitive scalp can be due to many things from infections to a pinched nerve in your neck, to wearing a hairdo that is too tight (think tight pony tail, for example). Without more information it's hard to say exactly what's causing your problem, but I doubt it's something serious, especially if it's been ongoing for a long time. ...Read more

I have this bump on my scalp under my skin for years Feels like it is getting bigger. Tender to touch. No headaches. Hurts when I hit it on accident.
Lipoma: You probably have a benign "lipoma" which is a benign (not dangerous) little fatty tumor. They usually don't grow and do not hurt though. The fact that you hit it may make it hurt and if the pain quickly goes away there is no need to worry, but it still should be checked out at some time and your doctor can feel it and in a few minutes confirm it is a benign non worrisome lipoma. ...Read more
Skin on scalp is tender, sensitive and bit painful if touched. Hurts once in a while, in same spot. Didn't hit myself but feels like it, like a bruise?
See an osteopath: It may be difficult to determine why this is happening unless it is physically examined by an osteopathic physician. They may find that there are certain structures on the skull that may be more tender than others that may be on a suture line, or edge of a bony prominence on the skull. You receive more information, once this examination is done. ...Read more

Sunburn or allodynia: First, is your scalp sunburned? If so there is your answer and I would recommend wearing a hat. Allodynia can be a prodrome up to 24 hours before the onset of migraine and there are other causes as well. You could have occipital neuralgia. this should e discussed with your doc ...Read more

I sometimes get sore spots on my scalp. When I look nothing seems to be there. It hurts to touch or brush hair. Should I worry about this?
May be fungal: Perhaps worrying about these bumps on your head which could be a form of fungal infection enough so that you either see your doctor or a dermatologist would be a good thing. Otherwise, Worrying about it more than that is not in your best interest since you are likely to be around at least another 70 years to pay Uncle Sam his share of your wealth- with or without these bumps. ...Read more

My boyfriend touched his cold sore, didn't wash his hands, than touched my scalped to give me a head massage. Can I get a cold sore on my scalp?
Possible: But very unlikely. Odds are you are already carrying this virus. If you kiss him when he has no cold sore you might get it anyway. The virus is present on the skin intermittently when it looks perfectly clear, between attacks. Most people are infected with no symptoms and are therefore immune. A blood test can tell you. Valacyclovir pills are very effective for symptoms. ...Read more

My scalp has been sore to the touch for 3 days now. The surface area is a half circle from above ear around the back to the other. No abrasions?
Herpes zoster?: Assuming no trauma, this could be an early stage of herpes zoster (shingles) and you should look carefully for red bumps, blisters, etc. However, shingles usually doesn't cross the midline, so "around the back to the other [ear]" is atypical. Still, keep an eye out for the rash. Even if none appears, see your doctor if the pain is severe or continues another 2-3 days. ...Read more
My Son is experiencing lump on top of his head under the scalp. It is skin color, pencil eraser in size, tender if touched harder than a pimple?
Not to worry: This lump is too small to worry unless it grows in size over the next several months. More than likely it is a benign knot due to either acne (pimple) or a lipoma which can get tender if you keep mashing it frequently. I would advise you to check it but not more than once monthly and note down the size. Unless it grows in size, there is nothing further to be done ...Read more
