Menstrual changes, such as what you described in your post, are fairly common in women at any point in their reproductive years. If you missed any pills, or were late taking them, this could also be a possibility. Also consider taking a pregnancy test even though the odds of this are less than 1% if you take your pills as directed.
Other causes of abnormal periods are increased stress/anxiety, extreme weight fluctuations, hormonal imbalances (including thyroid disorders).

If your cycles return to normal over the next few months then one abnormal cycle is not an issue. Always make sure your pregnancy test is negative. Dark or black blood is often a sign of old blood. If you are not ovulating regularly and having abnormal periods (dysfunctional uterine bleeding which is periods that do not follow ovulation) then it can consist of a lot of old blood that has been in the uterus.
