This is, however, a rare thing, and the constipation has to be both very, very severe and very long standing. Bowels vary: Bowel transit time can vary from day to day. If things are moving through slower, stools get harder. If things move through faster, stools softer. Things besides diet can affect transit time - even how active the little guy was on a particular day.
