Pus is full of white blood cells (which fight infection) and microorganisms causing the infection. However, when pus collects in a cavity it forms an abscess. Pus should be drained from wounds to help fight the infection and help the wound to heal normally. ...Read more

Is it necessary to drain out pus from cut wound? The wound is not deep yet not bleeding, but it stinging when i'm bathing. What should I do?

Get the pus out: Having the pus drain is a good thing. If the pus makes a pocket it gives it a chance to grow and spread. Clearing it is best. Signs of concern would be fever, increased redness, warmth, and pus production. If those occur please see a doctor. ...Read more

Basic wound care: In your situation, the stinging when bathing is okay. It is not necessary "to drain out pus", could be dangerous. Okay to wash wound with warm water, a little soap, rinse well, pat dry, hair dryer wound, cover with gauze (available at drugstore over the counter). Check in with doc first thing monday, sooner if spreading redness/fever occurs. If your wound is infected, needs a doc. ...Read more

Boil in inner thigh, treat w warm compress & amox, less pain & redness, no draining of pus bcos wound healed, but ders hard part below the skin,is it ok?

Residual infection: The hard, leathery, often darkened skin @ the site of a boil is residual inflammation from the skin infection. The skin should soften over time, but cd leave a scar. I wd say at this point, it's normal. But watch for fevers, more drainage, or worsening symptoms that may mean the infection (boil) is coming back. Also get checked for MRSA & diabetes (which predispose to boils) if this is not 1st one ...Read more

I have a bump on the back of my neck. And it's draining pus. What could that b?

Pustule/abcess: Occasionally the oil glands or hair follicles are invaded by skin germs. Various forms of staph or strep are the most common agents. Staph more commonly stays local while strep causes redness & extends under the skin surface. A warm compress over the area increases blood flow and allows the body to heal itself sometimes, if it persists, your dr may need to open & drain it & rx meds. ...Read more

Do I drain the pus from the lesion on my lip?

Be careful: I would strongly consider you seeing a healthcare provider if there is an abscess(collection of pus) in and around your lip. You want to be careful in this area because it scars easily and if it is on your upper lip - in the so called danger triangle - there is a chance(rare) that a spreading infection could spread "back" towards your brain! ...Read more

I have a wart that was frozen off by the doctors and it is inflated and has pus inside should I drain it or leave it alone?

Return to your doc: You likely have an infection - probably a small abscess. Whenever the skin is "broken", it leaves the person vulnerable to infection from bacteria that is normally located on the skin. I am assuming that the wart was removed recently. Return to your doctor so it can be inspected, and it may possibly be treated with antibiotics and/or drained cleanly. ...Read more
