Why Does Prednisone Make Me Cough So Much
Im on 30 mg of prednisone and a puffer ever four hours for the past two days but it has no effect or has not helped the cough is that bad?
It depends: How long have you had the cough? How disruptive is it? Are you coughing up yellow sputum? Do you smoke? You may need antibiotics. Another modality to try is to put one bottle of hydrogen peroxide into a humidifier, and two bottles (same size) of water. That gives a 1% aerosolized solution of peroxide. Kills virus and bacteria on contact, and breaks down into water and oxygen. ...Read more
Prednisone is a synthetic cortisone. The body makes cortisone, a natural hormone made in adrenal glands. The body converts it to Hydrocortisone to become active. 25 mg of cortisone has about same effect as 5 mgm prednisone. The average person would produce 3-6 mg of pred daily. So why use a substitute? The synthetic has more anti-inflammatory effect; but has less effect ...Read more
Yes:: Hopefully it is low dose and should be tapered down as a 6--5-4-3-2-1 dosing over 6 days. Dome physicians just use a twice a day course for no more than 7 days. I always recommend taking this medication on a full stomach and check for side effects: nervousness, stomach irriation, insomnia, etc. ...Read more
I took prednisone And coricidin for cough, later in day passed out briefly, could these drugs cause this?
My son just arrived back from a five week trip to Shanghai. He is congested, and has a HORRIBLE COUGH. The dr prescribed prednisone. Is that correct?
Asthma?: Prednisone will relieve airway inflammation in a flare of asthma. Sometimes even in patients without a diagnosis of asthma, wheezing can develop as a result of bronchitis, and prednisone can help ease breathing in this context. It will not treat the underlying cause of a respiratory infection which is usually a virus, and only time, rest and proper support/self-care treats viral bronchitis. ...Read more
Should i be worried my son, aged 19, has just started taking prednisone (5mg) once a day and is on a loading phase of 3 tabs, 3 tabs, 3 tabs, 2, 2, and 2. He is on the last day of this phase and has started to cough and has a temp of 99. He is in pain and
Why ?: Prednisone is an anti-inflammatory agent that mimics a stress hormone made by the adrenal glans in humans. They estimate we all release the equivalent of 5 mg of prednisone /d.This is a relatively low dose & fits with treating a minor issue. This is unlikely to cause "roid rage" or changes to muscles.Steroids can do a lot of good when used appropriately but there is some bad press out there ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer

Is it advisable to take five prednisone per day for five days? My sister was prescribed the drug for a persistent cough. Is this safe?
Prednisone dosage: High doses of corticosteroids like prednisone cause serious health problems, but only with prolonged therapy. Five days treatment is entirely safe. How effective it will be is another story, however. Perhaps worth a try, but often has little effect against symptoms of respiratory infection. ...Read more
I just started prednisone 20mg after my cough wasn't improving (traces of blood in phlegm); the cough seems to get worse. Is this normal?
Dr prescribed 3 days of 2ml liquid prednisone for 11months olds' asthma and cough, but its day 4 and he's not better. Can I keep giving it to him?
See your doctor: I would advise you follow back up with their physician to make sure something else has not developed. As they saw him recently, they will be the best equiped to evaluate if a change in treatment is necessary. ...Read more
How often can a steroid burst safely be done? Took 5days prednisone 3wks ago, now need help again for horrible cough. Dangerous to do another burst?
Dangerous w/o superv: Coughing is not best treated with steroids. If you just finished about of using the prednisone, and you feel you need steroids again to control your symptoms of coughing., then you need to call your doctor first to let her or him know that you're having the same symptoms. Then s/he will decide what is best for you to take for your cough, since you have a celiac history. You need to be under medical supervision. This is the safest route. ...Read more
On prednisone for cough, weaning off next 4 days. Can I have a few alcohol drinks this weekend while taking doses 20mg or less / day of prednisone ?
Took prednisone for 1st time today prescribed for cough. Ended up w/ terrible pounding headache all day. Should I stop taking it ?
No: Headache is not a common side effect of prednisone - it’s hard to say if it’s from the drug, coughing, or illness. Would recommend Tylenol for headache (not aspirin or ibuprofen). See if the headache is any better on day 2. If not or it worsens, get in touch with the doctor who prescribed the prednisone for additional guidance or a potential change in therapy. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Taking 3rd round of prednisone within 7 weeks, this time for severe cough. allergic to most other meds (hives), options limited. am i in danger?
H2O2 Humidifier: Try using 1 bottle of hydrogen peroxide and 2 bottles of water in a humidifier, and run it all the time wherever you are. That will give you an aerosolized solution of 1% peroxide, which will kill viruses and bacteria on contact when you breath it in, which will then break down into water and oxygen. Completely non-toxic, and should hasten your recovery. ...Read more
I woke up with a pain in my side. It hurts when i cough or move certain ways. I just finished a med pack of prednisone for wheezing. Should i worry?
Could taking prednisone for my cough affect my getting over the flu by depressing my immune system?
Yes and no: This is always a balancing act. Yes, high doses of Prednisone can decrease the responsiveness of your immune system, but the sleep disruption from a severe cough can be just as immunosuppressive. Particularly if you have asthma, it is helpful to take steroids to treat the cough; once you're able to get a full night's rest for a few days, you'll be able to fight off the virus despite the prednisone. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
I can't get rid of a cough that starts mid chest. I'm taking prednisone & clarithamycin (3 days). Up half the night. How can I get rid of it.?
More information: You may need a chest xray, inhalent, or other breathing treatments as well as antireflux medication. Asthma can be set off by lying flat if you are having reflux. Discuss your diagnosis with your doctor (asthma versus bronchitis versus infection, etc) and that will give you a time line and a game plan. ...Read more
Cyclic barking cough occurs every 3-4 weeks. Diagnosed with asthma and allergies. Meds don't help. Only thing that takes it away is prednisone. Help!
Allergy cough: Chronic coughing episodes can be very difficult to diagnose. About 90% of the time, they are due to asthma, postnatal drainage (allergies or infections cause this) or reflux; the other 10% of the time, rare conditions. Sometimes multiple common causes. You mentioned having allergies but not using antihistamines, nasal sprays, shots or avoidance. Have your sinuses checked + don't smoke! try a ppi. ...Read more

After finish antibiotics, cough syrup prednisone medications to treat bronchitis, is it normal after 1 week to feel chest congestions and cough again?
Yes: However it is important to get in touch with our prescribing doctor. Something should get better by now examples--- shortness of breath, sputum production, sputum color etc. The respiratory epithelium is replaced by an young immature epithelium ( lining of the breathing tubes) as a part of the healing process. It is very sensitive to stimuli resulting in prolonged cough ( upto 6 weeks ). ...Read more
