Tough question: I have had several patients report sensation of something getting "stuck" in their anterior neck. Several have had MRIs of the soft tissue in their neck and scopes of the throat. All have been negative. I have come to the conclusion they had one of the muscles or ligaments (stylohyoid) in their neck "sticking" on the horn of the hyoid bone. Crepitus: The other name for the cracking noticed around joints, isn't necessarily a sign of dangerous pathology. If you have no pain or limitations on your range of motion it may be related to a process known as "cavitation" (like with knuckle cracking) alternatively to rapid stretching of the ligaments. Cervical strain: Sounds like you may have cervical muscle strain and disc inflammation . Try warm compress to improve circulation, use cold compress if any more acute pain develops. Try gentle neck stretching exercises. Over the counter Aleve, Tylenol (acetaminophen) or ibuprofen may benefit you. You may Also want to try vitamin D3 and glucosamine.
