D3 is Active Form: Make sure you are talking about d3, not d or d2 which are inactive & have to be converted in liver, kidney, etc. To d3, calcitriol, the active form. If 20 applies to d3, then about 50, 000 iu once weekly for about 3 months, then recheck, would be reasonable. Goal >40, probably ~60, commonly reasonable. Bio-tech d3-50 50, 000 iu/cap a choice I have used & available online. Beware of many in stores. ...Read more

Low Vitamin D: Trust your gp. Your vitamin d level is a bit low, but not "too bad." you can take extra vitamin d supplements -- say, 4000-5000iu/day for a couple of months -- and then retest your level. This amount of daily vitamin d is safe. ...Read more

Rx'd Vit D 50,000 units weekly x 12 wks, but i don't know level. Is 12 wks standard prescription or do you have to be really low to take it that long!

Vit D treatment: There are several regimens for increasing Vit D levels. One is 50,000 units weekly for 6 weeks, and then rechecking the level. 12 weeks is a bit long, but if your original Vit D was very low, or if you have GI malabsorption, it may be needed. It is unlikely you'll get Vit D toxic after 12 weeks. ...Read more

Low vitamin D how much to take??

Low vitamin D how much to take??

Depends: If you have had your Vit D level tested, your doctor has probably given you some recommendations based on that. Encourage him to write prescription strength if your insurance pays for i (sometimes prescription strength, if generic, can be cheaper than over the counter too, even if you don't have insurance). Your Doc's advice is best. Too much/too little is not good. ...Read more

What can I take as an alternative to adcal-d3? It tastes disgusting and my levels of vit d are low. Thank you!

Generic D3: Get the cheapest generic vitamin d3 you can at a pharmacy or discount store. You generally want to take 2000 units/day, which will normalize levels in about 90 days. If you need calcium, try some of the otc brands, depending upon your dietary calcium levels and needs for supplements. Take w/meals to avoid problems. D can also be taken 10k/week and 50k/month, but not as effective. ...Read more

Low vit d level in report feeling week all the time takes long time to recover after any physical exercise, can it be low protien also?

Low vit d level in report feeling week all the time takes long time to recover after any physical exercise, can it be low protien also?

Probably not protein: Your symptoms could be due to many conditions but at your young age low protein is not likely unless you are eating a very low protein diet. I would suggest a complete exam by your doctor and testing for anemia and thyroid disease. Make sure you are taking adequate vitamin D3 if it has been found to be low. ...Read more
