Why Does My Heart Pound And Race When I First Wake Up
Palpitations: You are having palpitations, which can be caused by many things, including thyroid issues, anxiety, arrhythmias, caffeine, hypoglycemia, among many other things. You need to be evaluated both with blood tests and possibly with a 24 hour monitor called a holter monitor to see what the heart is doing during these episodes from an electrical standpoint. ...Read more
Depends: You may actually be feeling your heart beating abnormally but it's just as likely that you're just more aware of your normal heartbeat. The distinction can easily be made by wearing a 24 hour (holter) recorder (obtainable from your family doc) which will record and document what your actual rhythm is. If the rhythm is normal, relaxation techniques will help. If abnormal, treatments are available. ...Read more

Atrial fibrillation: Tell your doc what you just mentioned and ask for either a holter or event/loop monitor. Hypnopompic Stimuli: It's not entirely clear what circumstances you're referring to, but there is something called hypnopompic state which is a very stimulating dream-like environment just before waking. What can cause my heart to feel like its racing but my heart rate is ok especially when I first wake up but didn't stand up yet?
Hard to say: This is hard to give you an answer without tests and an examine. One thing to know is sometimes the heart beat can be so fast that it has trouble filling up every time. When is the best time to check your heart rate? When going to sleep and when I first wake up in the morning it's lower. During the day it's higher.

Is there a specific reason why I'm so shaky and my heart races when I wake up in the morning until I take my xanax (alprazolam)? I don't want to take this 4ever):
Xanax (alprazolam): Xanax (alprazolam) produces tolerance -- you gradually need higher doses for the same effect. Also, when your xanax (alprazolam) level decreases overnight, you can get inter-dose withdrawal symptoms (like shakiness & heart racing). Please discuss this with your doctors -- these issues make xanax (alprazolam) not a good long-term option for anxiety, even though it's potent.
