My left calf muscle hurts and swells up when I exercise it, what causes this?

Strain/partial tear: Calf swelling and pain can often be due to local trauma- either a significant strain or actual partial muscle tear. I have prom tonight and I still have a not in my calf muscle and it hurts to walk. I've been stretching it out but it just tightens back up. Help?

See a doctor: The knot in your calf should be examined by a doctor. In the meantime, stop stretching as it's not helping at this point. Most likely you have a tear in your calf muscle, which would need some time to heal. But there are other possibilities such as blood clots. If the pain is severe, skip the prom and go see a doctor today. While waiting to be seen, rest, keep your leg elevated, and ice it. ...Read more

Partial tear: Usually this history means a partial tear of one the calf muscles. The medial head of the gastrocnemius is the most common. Tingling may just be from some swelling around the nerve.
