My 2 year old daughter has a little hair under her arm and gets body odor when she is sweaty is this a problem? Is there a deodorant she can use?

Have her seen by ped: Children should not have body odor or arm pit hair before puberty. This may be a congenital hormonal disease. There have been cases where breastfed children of mothers taking hormones may be absorbing these. Also, if any parent is using topically applied hormones, take care not to let child come in contact with area of application. Have child seen by a pediatrician or pediatric endocrinologist. ...Read more

My 9 year old daughter is suddenly experiencing hairfall from last 2 months. What can be the cause ? How can this be treated ?

Several things: It can be treated once the cause is found. Does she pull on her hair, does her hairdo cause thr hair to be pulled tight etc. I tend to think that and exam with your family doctor or a dermatologist will settle you mind and help your daughter with her self esteem. It's tough when a female starts to lose her hair at almost any age. ...Read more

What explains a 3-inch diameter circular patch of bad dandruff on the crown of my 9-year-old daughter's head that will not go away?

Tinea = ringworm: That could be 2 or 3 things, but most likely tinea capitis, aka ringworm. It's not a real worm, but a fungal infection. It's somewhat contagious, but won't go away until properly treated. She'll need to be checked out to get that done. ...Read more

My 8 year old daughter is overweight but my 9 year old daughter isn't. Why does my youngest gain so much weight and yet eats the same food as her sis ?

My 8 year old daughter is overweight but my 9 year old daughter isn't. Why does my youngest gain so much weight and yet eats the same food as her sis ?

Good question: If both of your daughters eat the same diet and one is very overweight, that child may have a medical problem leading to weight gain. I am assuming that in addition to similar diets they have similar levels of activity and sleep. Have your younger child checked by her doctor for medical conditions that can contribute to weight gain. If none, consider emotional concerns, stress etc. ...Read more

My 9 year old daughter bought a Bottled soda today, got back into the car and was eating her chips and noticed something on her soda bottle. She scratched it off with her finger and continued to eat her chips. She even licked her fingers. Then she aske

She should be ok: If there was some debris on her soda bottle, it would be unlikely to be something toxic, as that would be avoided in food manufacturing and transport. There may be some germs, but fortunately her immune system is fairly well developed and she is unlikely to get sick. ...Read more

Help docs! my 9 year old daughter has a pectus excavatum?

Relax: Talk to your pediatrician. Most pectus patients have few if any symptoms. If they are present, exercise intolerance, chest pain, shortness of breath, etc, can be seen. Most children lead full and active lives with no therapy. If you want to have it repaired for cosmetic or psychological factors, talk to you doctor about timing. If done too early, recurrence is possible. ...Read more

My 9 year old daughter is about to have her first filling at the dentist and is really nervous what can I tell her to expect them to do she is scared ?

Keep it simple: What you don't what to do is share YOUR anxiety with your daughter. All this is new to her and the dental staff is prepared to explain everything she needs to know. Vocabulary is very important. Something as simple as "the doctor will put your tooth asleep" can be a problem (she remembers a pet was "put to sleep" Let the dental office explain it all. ...Read more

My 9 year old daughter was diagnosed with pneumonia on Sunday she was given Cefdinir, is it normal that she has an low fever on and off?

Improving?: Antibiotics given for pneumonia can take a few days to weeks to completely cure. An oral temperature of greater than 100.4F is a fever, and if this continues for days, she will need to see a pediatrician to see if her antibiotics need to be switched. However, if her overall condition seems to be improving, I would take this as a positive sign that she is on the correct medication. ...Read more
