Why does low ferritin cause too many platelets?

Why does low ferritin cause too many platelets?

It doesn't: Ferritin is a marker of inflammation and also an indicator of iron stores. It is related to erithrocytes, red blood cells, but not to platelets, thrombocytes. I've not seen the correlation you describe in real practice. ...Read more

Ferritin (Definition)

Ferritin is protein complex that binds iron and controls iron levels inside all of our cells. Low levels in the serum is a useful marker of iron deficiency. Macrophages are cells that contain large amounts of ferritin, and this that helps them scavenge RBC at sites of old hemorrhage. High serum ferritin levels occurs from macrophage activation and is a ...Read more

Not sure: I know what you need help with. Your platelets are certainly adequate and not yet high enough to be concerned about but should be repeated in a moth or so. Otherwise do yo have a specific question? ...Read more

Recent labs showed high platelets high iron high tibc low normal ferritin level of 12 is this iron deficiency ?

Recent labs showed high platelets high iron high tibc low normal ferritin level of 12 is this iron deficiency ?

Likely: The best test for iron deficiency anemia (ida) is ferritin. Sometimes when there is inflammation (an possible associated anemia of chronic disease/inflammation, the ferritin may increase as an acute phase reactant). The "gold standard" for diagnosis is a bone marrow biopsy, but rarely needed. High platelets are also associated with ida. Treatment should improve platelets and ferritin. ...Read more

Recent labs showed high platelets (416), high iron (148), high tibc (475), but a low normal ferritin level (12). Is this iron deficiency?

Recent labs showed high platelets (416), high iron (148), high tibc (475), but a low normal ferritin level (12). Is this iron deficiency?

Suspect so: If the serum iron is in micrograms/dl, then this is not high but within the normal range, as it can be in iron deficiency in which the patient has perhaps taken an iron tablet or eaten steak recently. If the units for TIBC are micrograms/dl, then TIBC is distinctly high and this speaks for iron deficiency in any case. Don't treat iron deficiency without seeking a cause. ...Read more

2yrs of CBCs show low fluctuating (< reference ranges) on WBC, Platelets, and Ferritin (iron serum norm) and high (13) monocytes. Should I be concerne?

2yrs of CBCs show low fluctuating (< reference ranges) on WBC, Platelets, and Ferritin (iron serum norm) and high (13) monocytes. Should I be concerne?

Yes. Here's why.: Reference ranges are set so that a few percent of healthies fall outside on either side. Counts, especially whites, fluctuate wildly even from hour to hour. While low serum ferritin requires an explanation (are you sure you do not have colon / stomach cancer?), what's most concerning is that your and your personal physician have not chatted about labs despite your interest. Please do it soon. ...Read more

Lupus: What makes you think it is lupus? Did you have a blood test for anti-nuclear antibodies or any other autoimmune workup? Or do you have any symptoms? If you have concerns, go see a rheumatologist. ...Read more

Maybe: That platelet count is very slightly high. It could certanly be due to the inflammation associate with a bad sinus infection. Or it could be where you normally run--it is not so high that on it's own I would be concerned. However, if it goes higher or if you ever have problems bleeding or clotting, you should consult with your doctor. ...Read more

Male with absolute neutrophils is 1.09 and WBC is 3.4 and platelet is 309 and ferritin is 12?

Male with absolute neutrophils is 1.09 and WBC is 3.4 and platelet is 309 and ferritin is 12?

Labs: These mean nothing in isolation, but my best guess is your physician will seek a cause for iron deficiency (which drives platelets up whether or not you're anemic yet) and wil monitor the neuts. ...Read more
