Why Does Hematoma Cause Polycythemia
My husband has polycythemia vera and had a phelbotomy tues. It was a rough stick and caused a hematoma. He is in a lot of pain though his arm. Help?

Have JAK2-negative polycythemia. Any further testing that might diagnose the cause? Do not smoke (quit 5 years ago) and do not live in high altitudes.
No: Pv by itself does'nt cause low grade fevers. However, pv can increase your risk to have blood clots and blood clots can give you low grade fevers also, pv can transform into other condition i.E myelofibrosis as well as mds/ acute leukemia in about 20%-30%). Low grade fevers occur quite commonly in myelofibrosis and acute leukemia. See your md to rule out other condition i.e. Autoimmune , infection. ...Read more
Not that I know of.: The big changes of this are elevated rbc count, hemoglobin, hematocrit, and decreased ESR (erythrocyte sedimentation rate). The elevations come without decrease in volume, and can be up to 70-80% for hematocrit, and 8-9 million rbc count. Changes in RDW may be from so many rbc's in the system, but even if they do occur, do not apparently have effect on prognosis or relevance to the cause of this. ...Read more
Is it true that having polycythemia vera and exercising can cause muscles to grow quicker than the average person?
Polycythemia: Smoking anything deprives the body of oxygen and stimulates production of more red cells in compensation. Your doctor can order a carboxyhemoglobin level to see if this is an issue for you. There are numerous other causes of polycythemia: sleep apnea, benign and malignant tumors, and a bone marrow condition known as polycythemia vera. Is there anything other than polycythemia that would cause an increase in hemoglobin? Hgb always high, beginning @ 13yo. Diagnosed @ 21yo, Hgb was 22.
See below: Red cell only elevation is different from increased red cells, white cells and platelets. Which do you have? If you smoke, stop. If you do mountain climbing this can increase red cells.
