What kind of ankle sprain would coincide with loud popping and severe pain that feels like being stabbed?

A significant one: The "popping" is the tearing of ligaments (hopefully not bone) keep in mind if it is only a sprain, the torn ligaments are attached to bone. Sometimes a sprain of the ankle can entail an avulsion fracture (ligament taking a piece of bone with it) x-rays should be taken with such an injury. If any part of the foot is sore, this should also be x-rayed. Rice-rest, ice, compression, elevation. ...Read more

I sprained my ankle 2 monthss ago and there was a loud popping sound. I was cleared to play 4 days later. Now when I run it feels like stabbing. Why?

Popping: A popping sound during ankle spring does not always signify a significant problem such as a break or tear, but it certainly could represent some type of fracture or ligamentous tear. The question is who cleared you to play and what imaging was done. If your ankle still bothers you I would recommend seeing an orthopedic surgeon for an examination and possibly repeat imaging. I would not go to the er as they are not specialists. ...Read more
