Fast/slow/none: Assessing the fetal heart is a bit problematic. Since they are isolated inside the bag of waters, we are limited to detecting rate as fast/ slow/ normal or none. Various factors can lead to various rate changes. The fetal heart is usually beating much fast ; 130-160/min are routine. Stress can speed or slow the rate. When checking newborns, I have never had one with fibrillation in 3 decades. ...Read more

I had my ultrasound today and my ob said the fetus is too small to measure. Now I'm worried that the fetus has no heart beat. I'm estimated 5/6 weeks?
If at 11 weeks pregnant a fetus is measuring in at 6 weeks and no heart beat detected. Is it possible it is still alive and developing slowly?
Depends: If your dates are off and this is relatively common then it could be that you just got pregnant later than expected. You should have a heartbeat by 7 1/2 weeks, so repeat your hcg level (should keep rising) and repeat the US in 2 weeks. ...Read more
Is it normal not to hear heart beat of fetus if six weeks pregnant using normal ultrasound. Dr said that the sac is normal. Thanks?
Likely normal: An abdominal ultrasound will find the baby's heartbeat roughly one week later than a transvaginal scan, or between 7 and 8 weeks of gestation. A handheld doppler ultrasound device (the ones ob/gyns use during prenatal visits) may not be able to find a heartbeat until as late as 12 weeks. ...Read more

Hi, I am 8wks pregnant by LMP but first ultrasound showed 6wks n fetus measured 6.4mm (crl) but no heart beat. Any chance for viable pregnancy? Help me
Certainly: It is not uncommon for there to be a discrepancy between ultrasound and LMP for dating. It would be reassuring to see a heart beat but it may just be too early. If you are not bleeding, there is a good chance that a repeat ultrasound in a week will show a normal heartbeat. Good luck. It sounds like you will be a great mom since you care so much. ...Read more
At 9 weeks pregnant fetal demise happened. The fetus did have a normal heart beat for 2 weeks prior. Is it normal to misc. Once the h.B. Is present?
So sorry for yr loss: Miscarriage is very common--i believe 1 of 6 pregnancies results in a loss. The heart starts beating at a very early stage--ultrasound can detect at 4 wks, but it likely starts beating earlier than that. Beating heart this early just means it needs its own blood circulation, but as other organs develop, some are not compatible with life and so the miscarriage. When ready, try again. Good luck. ...Read more

Why did my fetus die in less then a week I was 14 weeks pregnant? I just went to the doctor last week I had a sonogram and the baby had an amazing heart beat and this week the fetus is dead.
I am so sorry that this happened to you.
We usually never know why a miscarriage occurs. There have been large studies done on this subject, and usually there is nothing wrong with the mom or the baby, but for some reason the pregnancy just doesn't "take". It may be an issue with the hormones or the placenta. Rest assured, there is nothing you can do differently at this stage of the pregnancy, but often women blame something that they have done which isn't true.
Discuss this with your doctor also, and if you have had more than one miscarriage you may need a workup, but many women have one miscarriage in their lives and have no difficulty with subsequent pregnancies.
Again, I am so sorry that this happened to you. ...Read more
I am 16 week of twin pregnancy dichorionic but part of my fetuses lose heart beat before 3 days I won't to ask what are the risks on the other fetu?
Dichorionic: I am very sorry about what it's happening to you. The management from now is conservative. A high risk OB physician shoul follow you very close. Counseling to you and your family, management in a tertiary center with good neonatal support, close fetal surveillance and evaluation of fetal anomalies indicated. There is risk for the surviving baby but you should talk to your OB physician about it. ...Read more
