What pills?: Pills from the doctor? Is your room cool and dark and do you go to bed at the same time and get up at the same time? Use your bed only for sleep or sex? If you don't get tired try putting on dark sunglasses about 3 hours before it gets dark to help. Pills from your doctor or melatonin supplements are ok. Don't drink alcohol after dinner either. Yes: A recent study associated the use of sleeping pills with a greater risk of dying. This doesn't prove cause & effect but it is certainly worrisome. I'd recommend trying non-pharmacologic means first before moving on towards medications. Some may. If sleep: Deprivation is severe - i may order a sleep med at that time. I have the luxury to see my patients back as often as needed. So i often start with recommendations for sleep hygiene or acupuncture. I am able to do this because i can see people often if needed. Retire ; rise same time each day.
