Why Do Stroke Victims Sleep So Much
Yes.: A stroke (interruption of the blood flow to a particular part of the brain) can occur at any time. While it is unusual, it can occur during sleep when the brain is supposed to be resting. Generally, your blood pressure declines when you sleep and there is less change in blood flow, so the chances are lower; however, if there is a stroke, oftentimes it will be known right after you wake up.
Intracranial hemorrh: After suffering a stroke, whether more common ischemic or less common intracranial hemorrhage, sleep pattern may or may not be affected. As long as you wake up refreshed and don't feel a need to nap during the day, then you're getting enough sleep. And you shouldn't fall asleep inappropriately either.
TIA: Mini stroke- if you have any symptoms of a speech defect, extremity weakness that lasted a few hours.

Is excessive sleep in an 80 years old a warning sign for a stroke? Given that we have high INR level? And trying to maintain it using coumadin (warfarin).
No.: Stroke does not have warning signs except for transient neurologic symptoms which are only recognized as transient in retrospect. Sleeping is not a warning sign nor is it associated with elevated inr. You should have had a frank discussion with your provider about the risks and benefits of Coumadin (warfarin) therapy using the chadsvasc and possibly hasbled scoring systems.
I heard that if you have sleep apnea you will more than likely have a seizure? Or a stroke if not treated I have had several seizures and one stroke.
Treat sleep apnea: The standard therapy involves a C-PAP unit, but some custom dental splints work in many. Yes, sleep apnea does provide a risk, and needs focused intervention. But also, you should be taking anti-epileptic meds, and stroke preventatives. See a neurologist and address all of thisSee 2 more doctor answers

After my dads stroke, his dr put him on Prozac and Remeron (mirtazapine) to help him sleep! Can these 2 drugs together cause severe mood changes? What do I do?
Yes: I would not use either drug with a patient who has had a stroke, as the adverse effect profile might present in a far more intense fashion, especially suicide risks with Prosac. I personally feel uncomfortable with the approach, and recommend a visit to a geriatrician or psychiatrist to get this straightened out.
