Many people i know with copd have more trouble with their breathing, when they quit smoking. Why is that?

Lungs start to work: one of the side effects of smoking is poor clearance of mucus from the respiratory system. Many long time smokers who quit (the right thing to do) will get a lot of coughing as their lungs wake up and get rid of all that junk that has been sitting there for ages... It gets better and the lungs can recover from the smoking with time. ...Read more

Why are so many people not afraid of vomiting? People don't worry and if they vomit they don't care but I fear it and avoid it. Therapy not helping

A primitive reflex: The vomiting reflex is controlled by two units in the brain medulla--one receives nerve impulses from the GI tract, the other is a chemical receptor. Both have nerve connections to not only the GI tract (pharynx, mesenteric vessels, bile ducts) but also from brain corticobulbar areas that mediate smells, sights, & taste. Thus, vomiting apparatus responds to a variety of GI & brain inputs. ...Read more

What happens if people use Synthroid (thyroxine) to lose weight, then why do so many people complain that it makes them get fat?

What happens if people use Synthroid (thyroxine) to lose weight, then why do so many people complain that it makes them get fat?

Doesn't work: If your thyroid function is normal, taking thyroid hormone will not help you lose weight. You would need to take toxic doses to raise your metabolism high enough to lose weight, and will lose more muscle than fat. In addition, high thyroid levels make you more hungry, so many people will gain weight rather than lose. There is no "easy" solution to lose weight. Eat less, exercise more. ...Read more

Either way, weight reduction if overweight/obese at any age is needed to control snoring together with treating the enlarged adenoids ...Read more
