The nose knows: The most likely cause of transient vocal raspiness in the morning is due to collection of fluid in the back of the larynx (voice box) which in tern is often due to allergy. Voice rest: Hydrate well. Consider using a warm air vaporizer. Mix several teaspoons of honey into herbal tea with a squeeze of lemon juice. Or make tea with 2 tsp of marshmallow root bark per 1cup of hot water (steep in a covered pot for at least 5 minutes). Drink several times a day or as needed to relieve coughing. Sit up during sleep: Elevate your head to prevent worsening reflux if this is contributing to your hoarse voice. Voice rest is helpful, gargling with warm water, decongestants and antireflux medication (prevacid, prilosec, nexium, (esomeprazole) etc) will also help. Hoarseness : It is very difficult to to make a 5 yr old to rest his voice, teach him to speak softly, indicate needs by pointing or body language, warm fluids should help, if no improvement you should consult an ENT who might need to do laryngoscopy to visualize the vocal cords & diagnose the cause of hoarseness in you son.
