Likely nerve injury: Sounds like a nerve injury, which are common. Is the burning in the same finger that was cut? If so, you likely cut the nerve in the process. If not, you may have crushed the nerve at the same time you got the cut. Usually, these nerve injuries heal with time, but can take months. You should have your doctor take a look, however.

Arthritis: You may be developing arthritic inflammation in the injured joint, however, if the pain is acute with a warm and tender joint, there may be bursitis, tendinitis or even osteomyelitis (doubtful without an acute penetrating injury ). May take Motrin to relieve some of the inflammation and schedule an exam with a rheumatologist or a hand surgeon (plastic or orthopedic) you will need x-Ray of the hand

Nerves?: Are you wearing a ring on the finger next to it? It sounds like you may have injured the nerve on the finger next to it just from bumping into the ring every day. Try a few days with the ring off and see if it improves. If you're not wearing a ring, did you have any injuries to the finger? Hope it gets better for you!

In holistic medicine sudden symptoms like these is a sign of acidic body causing oxidative stress. If this is the case use nac, lipoic acid, niacin, tryptophan and bromelain. Last 3 to relieve pain.

All of the sudden, the ring finger on my left hand is "double jointed," which negatively affects my oboe playing. How do I fix this? It comes and goes

See hand specialist: The sudden double jointed nature of your ring finger may infect be a ligament problem that has been caused by repetitive use or over stretching of the joint. Since you are an oboe player and it can have a significant negative imp ace i would recommend seeing a hand specialist
