Why does my right hand become tingly and painful enough to awaken me at night? It's like my hand "falls asleep " but it feels like painful pins and needles

Classic: Classic carpal tunnel syndrome. That might surprise you because there is a myth that carpal tunnel syndrome is pain with typing. Carpal tunnel syndrome is numbness that wakes you at night and it is genetic, so don't change anything you do. Try wearing a wrist splint at night to help you sleep. If you get numb even with the splint on, or if you have numbness that is either constant or lingers and you can't shake it out easily, then it's time to see a hand surgeon. ...Read more

I have been getting pins and needles in both hands and feet (not at the same time). I always sleep with head elevated, is this neck related?

Could be: There are many reasons for pins and needles in hands and feet. At 37 years old its unlikely to be neck related, but some people can have narrowing of the spinal canal from birth. More likely is neuropathy, where the nerves get sick. Sometimes its a simple nutritional issue. It's worth seeing a doctor. ...Read more

Splint: You may have carpal tunnel syndrome.

Rest, night splint, vitamin b6 100mg / day, over the counter anti-inflammatory meds and ergonomic changes to work space. If that fails then cortisone injection and surgery (endoscopic).

See a hand surgeon for treatment.

20 year old, healthy female, cold feet and hands, regular pins and needles in legs, numbness, tingling and sometimes throbbing, skin discolours?

Blood vessels: Hi
What you're describing is due to your blood vessels constricting (narrowing), possibly "Raynaud's phenomenon." Our bodies do this normally in response to things like cold but in some individuals, the degree of constriction can be severe and easily triggered. Avoiding triggers is the simplest thing to try. There are medical treatments available as well. Hope this helps ...Read more

Anxiety or medical?: A diagnosis of anxiety as a cause of physical symptoms can only be made when medical causes have been ruled out. Suggest you see your pcp for an evaluation of paresthesias. That said, anxiety can cause numerous physical symptoms even without conscious panicky thoughts because of the body's response to an adrenaline surge via the "fight or flight" reaction. I hope this helps. Best wishes. ...Read more

Can carpel tunnel cause both hands to turn freezing cold? I have been having my arms at night fall asleep and get the pins and needles and numb feeling in both arms. For the last week my hands ache they feel almost swollen like and my sensation in my fing

There: There has been a lot written about non-occupational risk factors for carpal tunnel syndrome. In one study out of boston about 11-12 years ago in fact it was determined that women who took birth control pills had an increased incidence of carpal tunnle compared to women who did not. The problem with a lot of studies is that while statistically it seems to implicate certain behaviors or co medical conditions or medications it doesn't help you as an individual trying to do what is right for yourself. Remember that a study like that offers guidance as a risk factor but may not imply a direct cause. There are a lot of coincidences too.

Tingling and numbness in the hand can be from carpal tunnel but aching, coldness can occur form that or other issues.

As far as stopping or starting birth control, talk with your doctor. Your neurologist should be able to clarify whether you have carpal tunnel or not and ifyou are not getting success with the treatment offered maybe you want to ask your neurologist about an emg/nerve conduction study or perhaps see a hand surgeon in your area.

If your curiuos you can look at the one of the styudies I am talking about, but none of these dtudies offer a direct cause and effect ie you can't say bcp lead to cts just that its been identified as a factor in this one study in this one population (the people studied). ...Read more

Can pins and needles, numbness in arms and hands, when asleep be a sign of cancer? Also get occasionally pins

Not really: If it is happening while asleep, I do not know how you feel those experiences. In any case if this is not happening all the time particularly while awake, it is most likely some benign process. Even if it is happening all the time it is sign of what we call peripheral neuropathy which is caused by multiple condition. Diabetes is by far the most common cause ...Read more

Want to know if I should be concerned about tingling in my left leg if I'm sitting on the toilet or sleep & my arms & hands tingle also when I sleep?

Probably not.: Such tingling is usually caused when you put pressure on a sensory nerve in your leg (when you sit on the toilet) or in your arm (when you sleep on top of it). As long as the tingling goes away when you remove the pressure, it is nothing to worry about. ...Read more
