Why Do My Hands Go Numb While Sleeping
Carpal Tunnels: You may be naturally resting on the palms of your wrists (maybe even laying your head on your wrists), unintentionally pressing on the flexor retinaculum which is a band that compresses the carpal tunnel. This is the pathway for the median nerve entering into the wrist, causing numbness. People who work on computers all day have the same problem. ...Read moreGet help from a doctor now ›

Hand : Hand numbness that appears in sleep and with repetitive movements is commonly a symptom of carpal tunnel syndrome, a condition in which one of the 3 major nerves to the hand gets compressed in the wrist. This causes numbness in the thumb, index, and middle finger, and sometimes in part or all of the ring finger, but usually not the pinkie. Discomfort from carpal tunnel syndrome can be felt elsewhere in the upper limb, but if there is true numbness anywhere in the forearm or arm, this can indicate a different problem, such as damage to the nerve roots or plexuses (big nerve interchanges) in the neck and shoulder. There are two other major nerves that go down into the hands, the radial nerve and the ulnar nerve, that could also be involved depending on the pattern of the problem it is a good idea to get hand problems checked by a primary care doctor, who can then refer to a neurologist if needed. Left undiagnosed and untreated, problems like hand numbness can become worse, or develop into weakness of the hands.
