I can't bend my fingers normally because the joints closest to my fingertips lock up. Why is this?

Most commonly: "Locking" is due to a significant "internal derangement" (Torn cartilage) and an MRI is usually the next step. Remember: It's not so much strengthening the joints but more so improving your flexibility at the respective joints and the surrouning musculature that supports the joints, that matters. You may want to undertake some resistance(weight) training program and a flexibility program(think yoga) to help with these issue. Trigger finger: It sounds like you have trigger fingers. A nodule may be trapping your fingers in the locked position. I recommend you visit a hand surgeon.
