Few things: Are the episodes random? Or are they clustered, happening night after night? If you are in your late 40's, and female with clustered sweats, this could be hormonal. Could be: Unfortunately not uncommon for effexor and other norepinephrine increasing antidepressants (eg cymbalta, less so Wellbutrin) to increase anxiety despite good compliance. Which means increased heart rate, shakes, sweats, headaches and other fight or flight symptoms. A trial of a regular ssri ( prozac, lexapro, zoloft, or celexa) can be a much better option. Unrelated?: Your night sweats may or may not have anything to do with your periods. You need to start taking your temperature, not when you awaken, because it the sweating bringing the temp down, but if this happens at the same time, wake up 20 mins before the sweat and take your temp.
