Post nasal drip: Could be one common cause of this. When you lie down, nasal secretions fall down your throat and irritate your windpipe. Once you have cleared them out, it doesn't happen until you lie down again. You could try using a decongestant nasal spray at bedtime and anytime you wake in the night with irritation in the area. Some steroid based nasal sprays are available, not sure whether Rx in the UK. ...Read more

HYPERTENSIVE HEADACH: Some people who have elevated blood pressure get headaches when there blood pressure is high. However, one's blood pressure is usually low when one awakens. Early morning headaches, or awakening with headaches are common in migraine patients. I would talk to your doctor about these headaches and perhaps wear a 24 hour blood pressure monitor to see if these symptoms are related. ...Read more

Medication timing: It's always a good idea to take medications as directed but I tell patients not worry about being precisely on time (there are enough things to worry about). Personally, i'd like to narrow down the time difference to an hr either way but I don't have an published proof, just my gut feeling. I just recommend not taking one tab at 11:59pm and another at 12:01am two minutes later. ...Read more

Yes and no: It depends on how you define insomnia. He technically has a sleep cycle disorder, which you could call insomnia. It doesn't really matter what you call it, but what you can do about it. He needs to get his body into a better sleep cycle - right now his cycle is to sleep for a few hours and then be up for a few hours. Not good for you or him.
