Time for exam: If the snow is there all the time, you really need to see your eye doctor for a full exam. Cover each eye separately to see if it's in one or both eyes. Make sure to describe it as well as you can for the doctor. If the snow comes and goes, it could be related to low blood pressure or with migraines (if you're prone to headaches). Good luck! ...Read more

Eye exam and CBT: Rule out any possible eye disease by an exam - not just sight test. Then consider a psych eval by a psychologist to Dx and give treatment recommendations. CBT is a way to optimize your mental health outcome. Medication alone is less effective. Learn how to handle stress. Best! ...Read more

Could visual snow dissipate when depersonalization leaves?

Could visual snow dissipate when depersonalization leaves?

Yes, depending: Visual changes are not unusual in depersonalization, and moreso derealization. If the symptoms come and go, then the visual snow effect may dissipate when the dissociative symptoms resolve. As usual, symptoms like this are found with other conditions, and a good medical evaluation is in order if it has not been done yet, before attributing this to depersonalization, or a related issue. ...Read more

No Rx yet: Visual snow is the perception of snow or static as seen on a TV screen that isn't tuned to a correct channel. The cause is unknown but researchers this year have discovered an area of abnormal brain function (hyper metabolism) on functional MRI that appears to be the cause. Much more work needs to be done scientifically. Unfortunately, for now there is no definite evidence of a specific treatment. ...Read more

Entopics: At your age, you are probably seeing what is termed entoptic phenomena (also known as flying corpuscles). In the right light against a uniform background like a blue sky or a clear wall, you see rapidly moving tiny blobs which represent the circulation in the center of your vision. This is normal. If this does not describe this, then you might check in with a neuro-ophthalmologist. ...Read more

Lamotrigine for migraines, "visual snow, " tinnitus...? Gabapentin doesn't do enough for me, doc recommended this as an option, how common are the side effects? What do you think of this drug as an option? He talked about other anti-epileptics like Depak

My opinion: I am NOT impressed with either lamotrigine or gabapentin, as preventatives for migraine headaches, and feel that Depakote, beta-blockers, calcium channel blockers, and topirimate are far superior. Upon waking or opening my eyes, I see a small transparent red spot in the center of my vision lasting 1-2 seconds. Should I be concerned?

Red spot noticeable: It is not common to see a red spot when you awaken. And if you see any red or pink spots, you should go to your eye doctor and have it examined. Through a dilated fundoscopic examination, they can pinpoint what is causing it, and what needs to be done, or if it just needs to be monitored. Yes, be concerned, and get a second opinion if you need to. ...Read more
