Shoulder Pain (Definition)

Shoulder pain is multifactorial. It can be from bone issues -- like arthritis. It can be from muscle tendon issues -- like a torn rotator cuff, or when a tendon is inflammed. It can also be from nerve issues -- like a bulging disk in your spine. Each diagnosis ...Read more

Can cervical radiculopathy cause pain in shoulder, arm, side of chest and sometimes hand? But no neck pain? Most pain is inner arm. Mostly when I move.

Strange but true: Cervical radiculopathy occasionally can be present without the presence of significant neck pain. That is a little odd when we see it and for that reason deserves to be looked at in detail to make sure something else may not be causing neurological symptoms such as a mass lesion, nutritional deficiency, etc. Emg studies often help answer this question as well. A good neurologist can help with this.

I brought side sleeper pillow and my neck and shoulder pain has gotten worst. I can't raise my arm or lower it with feeling pain.

Shoulder pain: There are many possible causes of neck and shoulder pain including pinched nerve and rotator cuff injury. Since this seems to be getting worse so that now your range of motion is limited, you need further in-person evaluation. Try your primary care doc first. If no success, see a PM&R doctor next. PT or massage may help, but get the right diagnosis first.

I have been having neck and shoulder pain on my right side for a week now. At times the pain will go down my right arm as well. What would cause this?

Your neck: Thank you for the question. There are many potential causes, but among the most common is the irritation of a nerve in the neck. The term "cervical radiculopathy" refers to the pain that can run don the arm into the neck from a nerve irritation in the neck. Uusally a phyxical exam and appropraite imaging studies can diagnose the problem.

Muscular Pain?: Hi, your recent onset of symptoms and your age suggest that at this point the most likely diagnosis is that you have a shoulder/upper back/neck strain. You don't describe radicular symptoms that would suggest a neurologic etiology. Initial treatment after an H&P and imaging usually starts with NSAIDs and maybe a muscle relaxer and also some therapy exercises to see if your symptoms will get better

I've been having this pain in the back of my head closer to my neck, it causes a headache, some dizziness and today it made my left arm/shoulder pain?

Could be a: Simple trapezius muscle spasm from over stretching or a problem with the disks or joints in the neck. You're 28, the trapezius spasm/strain is more likely. Try cold packs to sore areas and after looking at an image of it online look for ways to avoid chronic strain during hunching while sitting near computer/reading/sleeping. If the pain doesn't go away in a few days, see your doctor.

Neck or shoulder: You can get similar symptoms from an impingement on either your neck or shoulder itself. Best thing to do is see a physiatrist and get examined as there are special tests that can be done to determine which it is. If the exam doesn't lead to answers and MRI would be the next step. Heart problems can be referred to the left arm (angina) so if you have risk factors for heart disease see an md.

Pain: Not being a spinal surgeon can't be sure but it sure sounds from your description that it stems from the cervical level of your spine. See a spine specialist.

Cervical radiculopat: Sound like your mother has cervical radiculopathy (pinch nerve in the cervical spine). Usually caused by damage to the intervertebral disc and spurs (osteophytes). She should go and seek medical care.

Should I go to ER 56 yr old female bp left arm 130/90 74 pulse bp right arm 159/93 achy non sharp pain top center chest, left shoulder pain radiating from neck area, weakness in left arm

Yes: Er eval is a good idea. You have chest pain and left arm symptoms radiating from the neck, these could represent angina, which means an impaired blood supply to the heart muscle from the coronary arteries. There are certainly other causes of chest and arm pain, but your combination of symptoms sounds concerning. It's better to be sure, go to the er.

Cervical extradural cyst from TBI, appx 1/3 sz of canal, pushing spinal cord up. Weakness arms/hands, sluggish, severe neck/shoulder pain r side. Removal?

Sounds reasonable: You would certainly want to discuss the specifics of your case with your surgeon, but if you have a cyst pressing on your spinal cord to the extent it is causing weakness in your extremities, surgery is certainly a consideration.

Sharp pain in my left shoulder blade. Neck pain radiates behind my ear. Shoulder pain and soreness. And little arm soreness as well. Pinched nerve?

Sharp pain in my left shoulder blade. Neck pain radiates behind my ear. Shoulder pain and soreness. And little arm soreness as well. Pinched nerve?

Discuss with MD: You have a lot going on for your age, please discuss this with your doctor, you may warrant some further testing. This is not a good forum for this question as we can not diagnose "pinched nerve" without examination and testing. Your doctor may order a nerve conduction test coupled with an emg, or an MRI if they have not done so already. Discuss with your doctor.

Pectoral Spasm: This can present as pain in the shoulder neck and jaw. However, the heart should also be considered esp is there is history of heart problems. For tennis elbow, I would recommend banding and physical therapy first. Injections can be considered subsequently.

Bra strap causing burning pain in shoulder, arm, neck. Any tips?

Bra strap pain: Try wearing strapless bras for now and get resized; the strap may be causing some pressure and this in turn can cause the pain you have experienced - if that does not work, see a competent doctor for a complete history and clinical exam.
