Liver (Definition)

This organ plays a major role in metabolism and has a number of functions in the body, including glycogen storage, decomposition of red blood cells, plasma protein synthesis, hormone production, and detoxification. It lies below the diaphragm in the abdominal-pelvic region of the abdomen. It produces bile, an alkaline compound which aids in digestion via the emulsification of ...Read more

More info needed: How high a temp? Any swollen glands? Any other lab abnormalities? Any drenching sweats or just light sweating? Why are you on cipro (ciprofloxacin)? How low is the wbc?

Why do I have high levels of liver enzymes after the flu and fevers?

Why do I have high levels of liver enzymes after the flu and fevers?

Liver working: Liver cells can be infected by viruses, resulting in the death of these cells and the subsequent leakage of liver enzymes. Alternatively, liver cells produce proteins needed to fight infections, including c-reactive protein and a sedimentation rate.

Can pregnancy alone cause elevated liver enzyme levels? Alt level was 54. Is this considered high?

Slightly elevated: Alt of 54 is slightly elevated. Normal pregnancy is not associated with elevation of alt. Do you drink or take any medications? It would be good to discuss this with your ob.

Elevated liver enzyme level ALT 54:is this that high to be concerned? What are normal levels? Can this be caused if u have a cold or are pregnant?

Elevated liver enzyme level ALT 54:is this that high to be concerned? What are normal levels? Can this be caused if u have a cold or are pregnant?

Yes: The cause may be something as simple as being a bit allergic to your cold medicine. Your physician's next step is for you to repeat the level off alcohol and meds. If it's still up, a search for one of the dangerous-but-treatable causes (wilson's, hepatitis, iron-overload, a few others) may begin.

What will high potassium levels and high liver enzymes cause?

What will high potassium levels and high liver enzymes cause?

Worrisome: The high potassium may be from cell breakdown. The liver enzymes can be related to liver cells but can also come from muscle sources. Please see your doctor regarding possible muscle cell breakdown as the cause of the findings you mention above.

My liver enzymes are high. At what level does it become serious?

Depends: It depends on the underlying cause of the liver enzyme elevations. The most common cause these days is a one to five fold increase in liver enzymes due to fatty liver disease, however other causes like alcohol, autoimmune disease, hepatitis, etc can cause elevations. See a hepatologist to determine the cause. If your enzymes are over 500, it is concerning, depending on other factors and lab values.

What can someone do to bring down any high level of liver enzymes ALT (sgpt)?

What can someone do to bring down any high level of liver enzymes ALT (sgpt)?

Find cause: Don't treat a lab value. If the cause is alcohol, medication allergy, hepatitis virus, autoimmunity, iron overload, or Wilson's, get treated. This may simply be your body's way of asking for more exercise. Best wishes

My liver enzyme level is elevated and I am scheduled for an ultrasound. Should I be concerned?

My liver enzyme level is elevated and I am scheduled for an ultrasound. Should I be concerned?

Not specifically: It is very good that you ate following up on your blood tests. I do not know which blood tests are elevated. An ultrasound can look at both your liver and gallbladder. Sometimes blood tests to check for hepatitis exposure is indicated. Some medications can also affect the liver & your doctor may change them if indicated. Not to worry about, but good to have checked.

Liver enzyme level ALT 54 (slightly elevated). What levels do they reach if a person has hepatitis a, b and c?

Really Variable: In general, with chronic hepatitis c the levels can fluctuate between normal and usually not >300-400. Acute HAV and hbv can have levels in the 1, 000s. Chronic hbv can settle with levels similar to that in hcv. Hav does not cause chronic disease.

My boyfriend has an elevated liver enzyme count related to alcohol. His levels were at about 120 for both. What level does cirrhosis occur.

My boyfriend has an elevated liver enzyme count related to alcohol. His levels were at about 120 for both. What level does cirrhosis occur.

Forgive me: Ket me be frank. Your boyfriend is drinking heavily enough to put his health at grave danger. His liver may or may not go bad and it takes a long time. But other aspects of his life will go bad from alcohol. I guarantee it. If he cares about you, he will stop now. If he continues, recognize he is not the right guy for you. Be brave and best wishes.

Elevated Liver enzymes. ALT 126, AST 281. Seeing a gastrolologist Looking at charts. Is this extremely high levels?

Liver Disease: One can go into liver failure if their enzymes are more than five times normal. Your labs are four to eight times normal. This is very dangerous and must be addressed urgently to determine the cause of the problem.

What are normal ALT liver enzyme levels? Is ALT 54 high? Elevated levels due to pregnancy or having a cold maybe? (no drugs were taken for cold).

40 IU or less: We'd rather see them below 40, and most folks run 1-20. A few beers will kick them upwards; running a marathon is likely to put you into "danger zone" -- a lab value means nothing except in context. Let's repeat that alt in a few weeks off alcohol & meds -- or whatever your physician thinks best.

Give us the results: If you can send us the present results of your liver Function tests (LFTs) we can be more helpful to you. Most often the liver enzymes will normalize if the offending agent has been removed from your body.

What natural therapies can reduce my elevated liver enzyme ALT (sgpt) level?

Don't mess w/ liver: There are 2 kinds of liver enzyme abnormalities--that signal disease of the liver cells or of the bile ducts.Abnormal liver tests may reflect fatty liver, too much alcohol, toxic exposure, occupational exposures, lot's of viral infections, metabolic problems, familial liver diseases, problems with gallbladder, bile ducts, & pancreas. What are you treating with "natural therapy"? Best to find out!
