Different Causes: Hsv & aphthous ulcers can both benefit from in-office laser therapy (takes less than 5 minutes and significantly reduces pain and length of the presence of the lesions. May be oral aphthae: Herpes inside the mouth is uncommon. Oral aphthous ulcers are much more likely. The cause of oral aphthae is not known; sometimes oral ulcers are associated with other diseases or with systemic medication. Decrease acid: Many of my patients with mouth sores drink or eat a lot of acidic foods or beverages. I have them stop drinking coffee, tea and sodas and stay away from oranges orange juice tomatoes or other acidic foods and drinks. I also have them rinse their mouths after each meal with maalox liquid. They also rinse their mouths before they go to bed.
