Why do I get ingrown hairs on my head?

Why do I get ingrown hairs on my head?

No ingrown hair: There is no ingrown hair per se. It's a misconception that people feed on. What you have is inflammation of the hair folicule (sac) that is known as boil or medically as forunculitis. Why you get it is a good question. It indicates that local immune response is impaired. That can be seen in people with diabetes, psoriasis, or other systemic or local causes. Often no cause can be determined.

How do I get rid of ingrown hairs? I have it on the back of my head for a while now.

Ingrown hairs: This is a common problem in some races. The most practical way is to let the hair grow long. Then the curled ends can't pierce thru the follicle or back into the skin. Often you need to be on an antibiotic to treat the folliculitis until the hair grows sufficiently. Go see your dermatologist. There are other treatments such as laser available for some people as well.

Need photo: It is difficult to make an accurate diagnosis without seeing a photo of what you are describing. Based on your description, it sounds like you are getting recurrent folliculitis, probably from excessive sweat, causing clogging of your hair follicles. If it is recurrent, you may have developed community-acquired MRSA. Please see you clinician for further evaluation and treatment.

My recommendation is to probably use alternative ways to get rid of the hair if the problem is recurrent. You might need to see a Dermatologist and consider permanent hair removal treatment.

How can I get rid of an ingrown hair?

Laser: One of the best ways to treat an ingrown hair is to use a laser to destroy the hair follicle so that it doesn't come back. This is done with a hair removal laser (we use Xeo 1064). You can also do a needle excision, but you may continue to have issues with the hair follicle. Use of an exfoliant can help prevent ingrowth of hairs in the future.
