Canker sores are not viral, and they are not infectious - they are similar to other immune type reactions, such as dermatitis, etc, and are frequently related to stress (local or systemic). The lesion on your lip would more likely be a cold sore, and your tongue is a more typical place to get a canker sore. ...Read more

Amen! Little known. : Canker sores (apthous stomatitis) are quite a nuisance, but harmless. They're common, last days and make eating many foods-salty, citrus, tart (vinegary)-painful to eat (ketchup's horrible). Recurrent, can cluster, but is not herpes; & different than other, more serious stomatitis. IMHO local trauma, virus associated, but myths abound on causes & treatments; little evidence to support any. Ouch. ...Read more
