They're suffering: Some conventionally trained physicians may not realize that by its very nature, medicine is "holistic" -- involves the whole person (body, mind, emotions, and spirit) and relationships are essential too. Conventional training may also downplay the role of healing in patient recovery. In allowing this, we disconnect ourselves from what drew us into medicine in the first place. Great loss for all. ...Read moreSee 3 more doctor answers
Hey Doc, do us men need to masturbate in order to prevent prostate cancer or prostatitis? What happens if we choose not to masturbate at all? Thanks
Your choice: Very few young men are able to go without having an ejaculation at least every few days, by whatever means. You need to be able to sit still, focus on work and learning, and get to sleep at night. There is no "controlled study", but there's some evidence that "heroic abstinence" puts you at greater risk for prostate hyperplasia ("hypertrophy") and prostatitis. ...Read moreSee 1 more doctor answer
Why do doctors still make us wait so long? Cant they notify us about appt delay like in the commercial?
It's not the doc...: Good flow of patients, under 15 minutes wait time, ease of making & confirming appts, calling if back-up, courteousness, helpful staff, is largely a thing of the past; and not under the doctors control anymore...Except when a doc is lucky enough to stay in non-beurocratic private practice, still enjoys what doing, and gives a hoot. I dream of re-creating the 21st century trusted physician. Help? ...Read more
Doctors do not know of all the ways SSRI's mess with the changes occurring in a teen's brain? So why give them to teens? Do doctors just don't care?
A fact of life...: Nobody knows all the ways any medication, supplement, or food item can affect a person. That's because it is impossible in life to know "all the ways". Doctors (and people in general) make decisions based on what is known or what is likely. So, if a patient has a higher chance of getting better and living a decent life with SSRI's than without SSRI's, then the wise choice is to try the SSRI's. ...Read more
Nosey docs: Obviously not because they are nosey... Since both account for probably a good bit of the eventual diseases people will develop it helps docs advise and counsel, monitor health risks, for diagnosis, detection of addiction and hopefully treatment for those who need or want it. It also helps misdiagnosis and treatment errors since both impact on metabolism or lab results.... Really, you know : ). ...Read more
Checking for Hernias: The most common hernia in men is one that extends into the scrotum. This inguinal hernia, which is a weakness in the wall of the abdomen, can become life threatening if the bowel gets trapped in it and the blood flow is cut off. Some men have no symptoms until they reach that point, so the exam hopes to find hernias before they become emergent. ...Read more
