Why Do Babies Like Tags
Comfort: Many babies like to drag their blankets around by the tag on the corner. They will often chew on the tags of clothing. It is usually a symbol of comfort such as using a pacifier. It your baby seems to have other unusual behaviors, please see a pediatrician for a good developmental screening test.
Slippery: Who knows, really. But I thought after my first child I should have designed a toy to take advantage of that. But someone else figured it out: taggies - those adorable blankies and toys that are trimmed with tags. I think the answer lies in the fact that the tags are usually satin (nice slippery feel in fingers/mouth) and stick out from the shirt or toy. Appears to universal, though!See 1 more doctor answer
Reduces stomach acid: Tagamet (cimetidine) reduces production of stomach acid through blocking h2 receptors on the gastric parietal cell. This helps reduce aid indigestion / heartburn and can help heal erosions of the lining of either the esophagus or stomach. The h2 blockers are not as potent as the proton pump inhibitors such as omeprazole.
Stomach acid reducer: Tagamet (cimetidine) is one of the older drugs used for stomach and duodenal ulcers. Before tagamet (cimetidine) persons on occasion had to have part of their stomach surgically removed to treat ulcers. Tagamet (cimetidine) significantly reduced stomach acid production allowing the ulcer to heal. It is not quite as strong for a better word as say Prilosec which blocks all acid production but at a low cost tagamet (cimetidine) 300 may be just fine.
An old acid blocker: Tagamet (cimetidine), Zantac (ranitidine), Pepcid (famotidine) are H2-receptor blockers, introduced by prescription in late 70's/early 80's. All reduce acid production dose-dependently, & promote drug tolerance (requiring increasing doses of drug to block increasing # of receptors with chronic use). OTC dosing is a fraction of original prescription doses. Similar side effects, efficacy, duration.
Yes: It is OK to split a Tagamet asplit a Tagamet tablet.

Tagamet (cimetidine): I have not heard of any good clinical evidence that tagament has been indicated for the treatment of shingles.
