Should my husband cut down on drinking alcohol whilst were trying for a baby?

Should my husband cut down on drinking alcohol whilst were trying for a baby?

Yes and no: The general answer is yes, alcohol is not part of a balanced nutrition & not needed for normal body maintenance. Males get somewhat of a pass when it comes to the effect of alcohol on fertility. Unlike women who nurture a finite number of eggs, the male can generate new healthy sperm by the millions daily. Normal sperm would swim better than any affected by alcohol, so it's impact is less on outcome. ...Read more

My husband is pre diabetic his fasting level is around 120 I have noticed that he has a smell of alcohol but he hasn't been drinking?

Low Carb Diet?: I agree w/ dr killian that ketones may be causing alcohol smell on breath. However, it may not be a serious problem. If someone is following a low-carb diet as part of their treatment for pre-diabetes or diabetes, they metabolize fatty acids instead of glucose for energy, and ketones can build up. As long as the sugar is staying ok (blow 140 fasting, below 180 2 hours after meals) this is ok. ...Read more

My husband and I are trying to conceive. I am ovulating today but I have a concert in a week to go to. Is it okay to consume alcohol a week after ov?

Back to School?: Sex has to occur before ovulation. Before the egg is released from the ovary. Sperm will not reach the ovary in time to cause a viable pregnancy if one has sex after the egg is released from the ovary. There is no chemical or physical connection between a new fetus and the mother for about fourteen days after conception. Thus alcohol in the week of concept would not harm the fetus. ...Read more

How serious is a fatty liver with a lesion on it? Husband had this for almost 2 yrs now. Not being treated. He is a heavy smoker and no alcohol usage.

Hard to say: Hi. We really can't say. Fatty liver can be associated with cirrhosis, which increases liver cancer risk. The liver is a common site of metastases from elsewhere (e.g., lung cancer in a smoker). The liver lesion may be any number of benign conditions. I suggest he see a gastroenterologist. A needle core biopsy of the lesion may be indicated. Good luck! ...Read more
