I have been diagnosed w/ social anxiety disorder. I get anxiety and blushing. My doctor put me in prozac (fluoxetine). Is Prozac (fluoxetine) a good medication for my symptoms?

Common choice: Your doctor made a choice that is very common. However, psychological therapy or counseling is also a 1st choice without side effects and with skill acquisition for living more comfortably in general. They can work together if necessary, but i'd try therapy first and add drugs if needed. Just my bias. Good luck. ...Read more

My doctor put me on a zpack, naproxen and nasonex (mometasone) for a horrible sinus infection. I had facial pain, tooth pain andheadache. Now I have kidney soreness in the back. I am on prozac. What should I do?

Related?: Nonsteroidal antiinflammatory agents like Naproxen may have adverse effects on kidney function, but this is quite rare considering the number of persons using these medications. Inform your doctor of your new symptoms to receive appropriate evaluation and care. ...Read more

Doc asked me to taper off prozac (fluoxetine) from 40 mg to 30mg in a way that take 20mg on weekends and 40 on weekdays. Is this the right way.

How to taper prozac (fluoxetine): that seems rather odd. I generally don't see any problems with going down straight from 40 to 20mg if you do want to do 30mg, why not do 40 and 20 on alternate days ...Read more

Is the effective Prozac (fluoxetine) dosage usually 20mg? I had a doctor tell me 20mg used to be the only Prozac (fluoxetine) dose and going higher isn't necessary

Prozac (fluoxetine): The usual edose for Prozac (fluoxetine) is 20 mg. However, some people do require a higher dose if only part of the desired effect is reached. In my practice, if the patient requires more than 40 mg, I seek a consultation from a psychiatrist to determine if their are other psychiatric problems that need to be addressed and, perhap, new medication to fit that particular patient ...Read more

Been on Prozac (fluoxetine) for 5 days at 20mg. Doc said to stop. How long before leaves my system?

Prozac (fluoxetine) elimination: Prozac has an elimination half-life of 70 hours, with its active metabolite (norfluoxetine) at 330 hours. That means it will take 70 x 5 = 350 hours (or a little over 2 weeks) for fluoxetine to be gone from your system. It will take much, much longer for norfluoxetine to be eliminated also. ...Read more

Used 20 mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) for 4 months. Now cutting it down to 10 mg a day (doctors advice) for two weeks. Possible to have side effects by quiting now?

Doubtful: Going from Prozac (fluoxetine) 20mg daily to 10mg daily should not produce any untoward effects. However, if you think tapering is too fast for you, discuss your side effects with treating physician. Good luck. ...Read more

Some doc say add webutrin to prozac (fluoxetine). Some stop Prozac (fluoxetine) before starting welbutrin. Can one be clear and give the differences?

Some doc say add webutrin to prozac (fluoxetine). Some stop Prozac (fluoxetine) before starting welbutrin. Can one be clear and give the differences?

Treatment Decision: This decision has to do with why wellbutrin (bupropion) is being started. If a person is receiving partial benefit with prozac, the wellbutrin (bupropion) may be added to Prozac to try to get additional benefit. If Prozac has not been helpful, or if there have been undesirable side effects, then it is more appropriate to stop Prozac and try wellbutrin (bupropion) alone. ...Read more

How long does it take for 20mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) to reach it's full affect...Meaning how long should a patient/doctor wait to decide whether to adjust dosage?

How long does it take for 20mg of Prozac (fluoxetine) to reach it's full affect...Meaning how long should a patient/doctor wait to decide whether to adjust dosage?

Depends: There are different strategies for this. In some cases it may be best to push the dose up as high as can be tolerated without significant side effects to maximize the chance of a good response. Once a dose is reached, it usually takes at least a month for most of the effect to take hold (and improvement can continue for 12 weeks or more). ...Read more

I've been taking Prozac 60mg for a few months now. With no improvement, my doc switched me to cymbalta (duloxetine) 60mg. Can i stop the Prozac cold and switch over?

Consult Doc: Prozac (fluoxetine) is a long acting medication and stays in your system for a long time and usually does not need tapering down of dose, however you seem to be on a higher dose, tapering to a smaller dose should before discontinuing. Your doc is the best person to decide that. ...Read more

Why did my doctor tell me not to take my Prozac (fluoxetine) and adipex together? I have no health risk.

There have been: reported side effects including poor energy, somnolence, cold intolerance, constipation and dry mouth. But the #1 potential side effect that could kill you is Serotonin Syndrome, which will put your body in super crazy mode and do you in with high fever, seizures, irregular heartbeat, and unconsciousness. Fortunately there have not been many cases of SS, but it is potentially fatal. ...Read more
