Why am I frequently getting bacterial vaginosis? It comes right back, or never goes away after taking antibiotics. Could there be an underlying issue?

Recurrent BV...: ...is common, difficult, often very frustrating for both patient & doc. BV is not necessarily an STD, but sex often triggers it and consistent condoms sometimes help. Treating male partners doesn't help, but female partners for sure need Rx. Vaginal metronidazole (MetroGel®) or boric acid vaginal capsules may help. If your doc is unfamiliar with these, find a gyn with interest in infections. Read more

When taking antibiotics for chlamydia and bacterial vaginosis if I vomit will the antibiotics still work?

When taking antibiotics for chlamydia and bacterial vaginosis if I vomit will the antibiotics still work?

It depends...: ...on how soon you vomit after each dose. Within 30 minutes, treatment may not work. After a half hour, usually enough antibiotic is retained or has been absorbed to still be effective. If both doxycycline and metronidazole, don't take them together and take both with food. Avoid alcohol. Also, azithromycin 1 dose can replace doxycycline. Discuss all this with the doctor or clinic treating you. Read more

How long should I let bacterial vaginosis go before taking an antibiotic?

How long should I let bacterial vaginosis go before taking an antibiotic?

Why wait??: Bv is a synergistic infection involving gardnerella and a number of other bacteria. It is treated with Metronidazole oral or intravaginal treatment. Tinidazole and Clindamycin are alternatives. Oral and intravaginal probiotics containing lactobacilli can help. If you have this condition I see no advantage in delaying treatment. Read more

Chronic problems: May warrant an evaluation by a vaginitis specialist. If hygiene modification and Flagyl gel or pill has not been working, then their expertise may be needed. Make sure infection has been ruled out. Your doctor can also check for ureaplasma and mycoplasma to see if these organisms are present. The treatment is different. Good luck! Read more

I have bacterial vaginosis. I got an antibiotic from my doctor, but I have been eating yogurt and it has been helping. Should I still take the antibiotic?

I: I would ask the doctor who prescribed it. There are some serious bacterial infections. Regular yogurt has predominantly dead cultures. To get good probiotic levels think of kefir, greek yogurt and otc probiotics. Read more

My doctor told me I had bacterial vaginosis she gave me an antibiotic that I had to take every 12 hours when I went back I still had it. I'm confused?

Bacterial vaginosis: Without knowing how you were treated and whether your sexual partner was simultaneously given an antibiotic topically on his penis the best thing to do is to discuss this with your doctor. Although not truly a std this can be given back to you by organisms resident on your partner's penis. Read more

Imbalance: Bacterial vaginosis is an imbalance between the normal bacterial and fungal components of the flora of the vagina. Usually, it is due to something that changes the ph of the vagina, most particularly douching. Some women are more prone to it than others, and you should see your physician for an exam and treatment plan. Read more

Vaginitis: Call your doctor anyway. There are some types of BV that are becoming more resistant to treatment and may benefit with a course of a different antibiotic. On the other hand, it is also possible that you already had something that wasn't checked before starting treatment. Could you have an STI/ STD? Could you have a UTI now? BV rarely burns, usually just odor and discharge. Read more
