Triglyceride (Definition)

are crucially important, energy-dense, poorly-water-soluble molecules made of 3 fat molecules attached to a glycerol backbone. They are made by all animals, including humans http://goo.gl/H7mItd, mostly in the liver, as a way of storing energy & transported within fat carrying proteins (lipoproteins). My fbs, cholesterol, ldl, and alt/sgpt are high, but my HDL and triglycerides are normal. What does this mean?

My fbs, cholesterol, ldl, and alt/sgpt are high, but my HDL and triglycerides are normal. What does this mean?

Concerns: Need to see a doctor. Elevated blood sugar, fasting, along with elelvated cholesterol are both risk factors for heart disease. Diabetes or pre-diabetes can often be associated with fatty liver, which can raise the liver function testes (alt/ast) even if the triglyceride level is normal. Important to get this addressed asap. ...Read more

My ldl, HDL are very low below normal range but my triglyceride is very high. What should I do?

My ldl, HDL are very low below normal range but my triglyceride is very high. What should I do?

This combo a concern: High triglycerides are a very common cause of low HDL cholesterol and in many cases low or normal LDL cholesterol. This condition is often seen in patients with obesity, pre-diabetes or diabetes (insulin resistance) , and in combination with other cardiovascular risk factors such as hypertension. (metabolic syndrome). We treat tg's if >500, but if <500, then target first the ldl, then non-hdl chol. ...Read more

I have high triglycerides, normal cholesterol levels, but high iron levels in my blood. Any idea what this means? Thanks!

I have high triglycerides, normal cholesterol levels, but high iron levels in my blood. Any idea what this means? Thanks!

Not enough info: The high triglyceride can be dietary but liver disease and diabetes should be excluded. The high iron is only signficant if you have evidence of hemochromatosis which causes liver disease. You need a fasting serum transferrin saturation & fasting sugar, plasma ferritin and liver function tests. Elevated iron may simply be a sign of good health. ...Read more

What do cholesterol and triglyceride numbers mean for my heart?

What do cholesterol and triglyceride numbers mean for my heart?

Know your numbers: It's important to know your numbers. Ideal values are a total cholesterol < 180 mg/dl, triglycerides < 150 mg/dl, LDL as low as possible (close to 70 mg/dl) and HDL as high as possible (at least 50 mg/dl in women). ...Read more

I just had my cholesterol checked. ldl and hdl were perfect but triglycerides were high, and I've seen my heart rate pretty low can that be a factor??

I just had my cholesterol checked. ldl and hdl were perfect but triglycerides were high, and I've seen my heart rate pretty low can that be a factor??

Maybe: Typically high triglycerides and low heart rate are not related, except in the case of hypothyroidism, which can result in low heart rate and elevated triglycerides. Thyroid function can easily be assessed by a blood test for free T4 and TSH. ...Read more

My HDL and triglycerides are very normal, but i have very High LDL what could be the reason? diet is minimal and not fatty,,I'm thin and have crohn's

My HDL and triglycerides are very normal, but i have very High LDL what could be the reason? diet is minimal and not fatty,,I'm thin and have crohn's

Probably genetic: We talk little about the genetic component to LDL problems but they're actually a bigger factor than diet and exercise -- we simply can't do anything about them. And much of the traditional "wisdom" about diet and cholesterol probably isn't even true. Stay fit and be ready to accept medication should your physician and perhaps a second opinion consider it right for you. ...Read more

Discuss w/doctor: This is a complex scenario, and requires much more information and thoughtful consideration than a short answer online forum. Discuss this with your doctor, and don't hesitate to ask questions so the interpretation of your tests and the plan is clear to you. Hope this helps! ...Read more

Should I be worried about low cholesterol 130, if my tryglicerids are 80 and cholesterol was in the normal range last month?

That's fine: The reference range is actually meaningless when it comes to cholesterol. You're a physically fit teen and low cholesterol isn't a problem. ...Read more

I have recently been diagnosed with a high triglyceride level but why is my total cholesterol level normal?

Possible.: The formula for calculating total cholesterol is tc=ldl + HDL + trig/5. It is possible to have high trig and not have tc elevated. It is clear based on your normal tc level that your trig are not elevated much. Serious trig elevations are levels above the 500-1000 mg/dl range. ...Read more

How can I increase HDL cholesterol? Mine is35mg/dl and serum cholesterol-that I guess total- is 220 mg/dl. Are my levels normal for31y male?

Dietary Changes 1st: An HDL over 60 is cardioprotective. Increase intake of monosaturated fats like olives, olive oil, avocado and most nuts esp walnuts will help but remember these are high calorie foods so only a small amount. A fish oil 1, 000mg to 3, 000mg omega3 is also great. Plant sterols/stanols help-a spread in the grocery store called 'benecol' can raise HDL using 1 or 2 tsp instead of butter or margarine. ...Read more

My doctor says my bad cholesterol is normal but my good cholesterol is very low what can I do besides the Lipitor (atorvastatin) she prescribed to help?

Difficult: Hdl your good cholesterol is very hard to increase and there are really no great medications that increase it. You can try exercise, losing weight, adding high doses of niacin, fish oil, hormone replacement if indicated too help increase it. Also getting the type of HDL (fluffy or small with a fractionated panel) can provide more info to you. Get your LDL & tg low so you can decrease your risk. ...Read more

Cholesterol (Definition)

Your total cholesterol measures the triglycerides (increases with high sugary foods and baked goods, helped with fish oil), HDL (your good cholesterol-difficult to increase but helped with exercise, hormone replacement, niacin) and LDL (your bad cholesterol, decrease this w/ lean protein, ...Read more
