Lately my hands and feet will fall asleep alot, it even will wake me up at night?

See below: Tingling hands, feet, or both is an extremely common and bothersome symptom. Such tingling can sometimes be benign and temporary. For example, it could result from pressure on nerves when your arm is crooked under your head as you fall asleep. Or it could be from pressure on nerves when you cross your legs too long. In either case, the "pins and needles" effect -- which is usually painless -- is s. ...Read more

Nerve pressure: When we sleep, we oftentimes put pressure on our nerves by lying on top of them or folding our arms or legs a certain way. When this happens, we experience a temporary numbness or paresthesia which resolves quickly. There are other causes of numbness that should be evaluated by a physician. Therefore, the best plan is to get a physical and discuss this with your doctor. ...Read more

Nerve compression: The position you sleep in may be causing compression of a neurovascular bundle. The nerves and blood vessels that supply the hand and forearm pass into the arm under the pectoralis muscle and may be getting squeezed by sleeping on your side in a scrunched up position. Probably diet: Sounds strange? The brain and nervous system are highly dependent on relatively low calorie intake with sufficient vitamin concenration. Too many calories, particularly simple sugars and sweeteners creates a relative vitamin deficiency. It is, in fact, like "choking" a car engine. See my blog "oxygen the spark of life" that you can google. ...Read more

Every night I fall asleep I wake up with a tingling sensation in the ulnar nerve distrubtion of my hand. Is nerve gliding a good tx approach?

Possibly a first try: Nerve gliding is unlikely to make your symptoms worse, and many people find that it is helpful, especially when combined with antiinflammatories and avoidance of pressure on the elbow. If symptoms persist, a nerve block can be helpful, as can wearing cushioned pads while asleep to prevent pressure and excessive flexion at the elbows. Surgical decompression is sometimes required if all else fails. ...Read more

Possible Carpal Tun: There are other possibilities, but the most likely cause for your symptoms is carpal tunnel syndrome. This is the result of compression of the median nerves at the wrists and it is common for people to wake up to "shake out the numbness." I would recommend that you see a neurologist, but while you are waiting you can ice the wrists, try otc ibuprofen, and buy carpal tunnel splints for nighttime. ...Read more

Need eval: You need medical evaluation for your complaints. I would start with evaluating your neck as I would be concerned there is something going on in your cervical spine that's causing some pressure on the spinal cord which could cause your symptoms. Also concern would be diseases that cause what is known as peripheral neuropathy. Please see your doctor for evaluation. Hope this was helpful. Good luck ...Read more

My hands are swollen when I wake from sleeping. Just wondering why this may be happening?

Swelling hands: While the baseline issue cannot be ascertained simply by swelling. The reason conditions often swell the hands at night is a combination of gravity and lack of motion. Swelling is typically extra cellular fluid and without gravity driving this down towards your feet well your face and hands are swollen in the morning. It is a common observation!! Also motion keeps fluid out but whenu sleep no ...Read more

Why does my hands up to my elbow keep going numb and tingly. Also it seems to happen more when I'm driving and sleeping it wakes me up numerous times.?

Nerve compression.: Numbness and tingling in the hands is usually caused by nerve compression. The nerve can be compressed in the neck, the extremity or both. Your symptoms are consistent with carpal tunnel syndrome (cts). Cts is due to median nerve compression at the wrist, causing numbness/tingling in the thumb, index, long and 1/2 of the ring finger. Cubital tunnel syndrome affects the other fingers in the hand. ...Read more

I have a lot of trouble sleeping & wake up constantly due to my arms/hands becoming numb every night, could this be related to my hypothyroidism?

Fatigue: I wouldn't think that your HYPOthyroidism would cause you TROUBLE to sleep. Actually, just the reverse, you'd be expected to have trouble staying awake. But in terms of numbness in the hands and arms...that's possible. You'd know if that were the case simply by asking your doctor what your latest numbers are. I fall asleep quicker if lying on my right side but have an issue falling/going back to sleep on my left. Is it because I'm right handed?

Heart Anatomy: Not your handedness, but the location of your heart determines this. Your heart is on your left side and when you sleep most people will sleep on there right side, because you do not put pressure on your heart as when you lay on your left side. People do turn through the night and sleep on there back and left side for a period of time. ...Read more
