Why Am I Still Coughing If I Have Taken Tussionex
The cough reflex is a protective mechanism that uses muscles in your throat and chest to expel mucous and saliva that may contain pathogens that would otherwise possibly be inhaled via aerosol or to expel pathogens infecting the throat and respiratory system. Cough benefits the host by reducing load and benefits the pathogen which may then spread via aerosol. ...Read more
Gag reflex: Tussionex is a very strong cough medication so when one continues to cough despite taking this medication, it is usually a gag reflex cough. This type of cough is a protective mechanism (when fluids "go down the wrong pipe, " you want to cough). Instead of trying to stop this cough, it would be better to keep the mucous thin so that it comes up easier. This is done with an expectorant (mucinex.). ...Read more

Over-the-counter med: Cough & cold medicines are available over-the-counter w/o prescription in the States. Assuming that you're otherwise healthy & not taking any prescription medications, most cough meds should be fine for average citizen. Those w/high blood pressure should avoid decongestants while elderly should avoid older 1st generation antihistamines (side effects = dry eyes/mouth, can't pee/poop, confusion). ...Read more
I feel like I have bronchitis and had some cough medicine Tussionex from a while back and I have a really bad cough?
I am taking a zpak and tussionex for bronchitis but still congested and coughing is there anything else I can do, and I am taking tylenol (acetaminophen) for fever
Is tussionex syrup appropriate for someone who has Wolff Parkinson White syndromeper patient during allergy season who coughed all night?
Tussionex: Is a combo medicine containing codeine and diphenhydramine, wouldn't have a direct effect on heart rhythm, and I believe no harm in trying one dose to control cough, however, your description of having seasonal allergies and cough all night rather denotes lower airways irritation which can progress to constriction, codeine can worsen that, please check with your doctor/allergist for management ...Read more
It depends: Tussionex is sustained release. It provides a gradual amnt of hydrocodone over 12 hrs. Hycodan is dosed on a shorter interval. If you took Hycodan q 4-6 hrs you'd receive a higher quantity of hydrocodone in total. Both medications however should be used only on an as needed basis. My advise would be to be less concerned about which one is strongest and use the one that is most effective. ...Read more
Here are some. ..: Since Tussionex contains chlorpheniramine, an antihistamine, and hydrocodone, a narcotics, it may exaggerate voiding symptoms from prostate urethral restriction by aging and its enlargement. Clinically, urine flow may further slow down and bladder becomes less able to empty, etc. In laypersons' eyes, it flares up prostatitis but not as described. More? I recently took a little bit more than a tablespoon of tussionex that contains hydrocodone (your supposed to take 1 or 2 teaspoons or something?
Depends on whether: It is really a tablespoon or not. Most tablespoons are actually 2 teaspoons (10 ml)-a real tablespoon is 3 teaspoons (15ml). This is unlikely to cause any significant harm, but you need to stick with the recommended doses, and if those don't work, talk to the prescriber about what to do next, instead of being your own doctor/pharmacist. Also, don't use alcohol or other sedatives with it. ...Read more
Seek medical help!: This is an extremely high dose which could be deadly. You should seek medical attention if you have ingested this medication or are considering it. It is recommended not to exceed a total of 10ml per 24 hour period. 10mg of hydrocodone in every 5ml. 8mg of chlorpheniramine in every 5ml. Based on 120ml that puts hydrocodone at 240mg and chlorpheniramine at 192mg. ...Read more
An allergy med: Both contain hydrocodone, a narcotic pain medicine that happens to be a great cough suppressant. Tussionex contains chlorpheniramine, an old allergy medication that tends to be very sedating (makes you sleepy) - but also can be drying for congestion / mucus mambranes. Hycodan only adds low dose homatropine - no benefit for symptoms, it just gives bad side effects if try to exceed recomm. Dose. ...Read more
I took 2 teaspoons of tussionex (hydrocodone 20mg/antihistamine) at 4pm today. Would it be okay to go ahead and drink?
Depends: Neither is particularly effective. Recent tudies of cough medications have shown that codeine-containing cough medications work about as well as sugar pills (placebo) and other studies show hydrocodone equal to Codeine. Theoretically Hycodan (with an anticholinergic) should work better for productive coughs and tussionex (with an antihistamine) should work better if there's an allergy component. ...Read more

Cough: There are many causes of cough that range from viral and bacterial infections to reflux.
