I quiet smoking for a long time why am i just coughing up black stuff?

Cleaning up lungs: Smoke tends to shut down ciliary function. Those are little hairs in lungs that sweep out junk. So if you smoke for a long time, there's a tremendous amount of stuff building up in there that needs to come out. That's why smokers often report more coughing after they quit - that's their cilia returning to life & cleaning house. Obviously more complicated than that but hopefully makes sense. ...Read more

Get evaluated: Since you repeatedly punched a door you may have injured muscle, tendon, bone, nerve or all four. The best thing for you to do is ice the area for twenty minutes at a time and see your provider. ...Read more

For a month I've had lower back pain n stiffness making it hurt when I sit, cough, bend.. lying down/standing straight feels best. What could it be?

Consult PT: This could be a strain. There's a whole bunch of questions that need to be answered to make the diagnosis here as this is one of the most common complaints to primary care physicians. You can potentially make the diagnosis by trying a simple therapy. Lay on the floor with you face down and perform a press up, while keeping your hips on the floor. This provides back extension. Do this 10x/day. ...Read more

Hi, i sound wheezing every night from last ten days not in day and also bit stiffness on upper back and chest so what it could be? Not cough really

ProbNot preoccupying: If i were to guess, i'd say you have an upper respiratory infection (bronchitis). You may have underlying asthma that is usually dormant but gets unmasked when you have bronchitis. The pain is mainly "pleurisy" that is bruising of the lung lining which causes pain. You need: an evaluation which includes an exam and possibly a chest radiograph. If you have asthma, then peak flow or lung function and a medical management plan are in order. You should be screened for risk factors for tuberculosis and other lung diseases or infections. Do not wait, and get evaluated soon! ...Read more

I cough up black stuff, why?

I cough up black stuff, why?

Go see your doctor: While we no longer, if ever, use color of phlegm to determine if antibiotics are necessary, black stuff sounds out of the ordinary, especially if you smoke. You didn't mention any fever, sweats, chills, unexplained weight loss, or shortness of breath. Nor did you mention your (a)vocation or any environmental exposure. Still, it's a good idea to go see your family doc for an evaluation. ...Read more
