Depends: Dark specs may be blood but may be other. If blood can be coming from back of nose or sinuses, but may be coming from lungs. Blood is concerning when not where it should be, although there is less genral concern when from sinuses. The specifics of the dark spots and their origin needs to be determined. Go see your doctor: We used to determine need for antibiotics based upon phlegm color but no more. Majority of upper respiratory illnesses are due to viruses which won't respond to antibiotics, just time. Average duration of cough illness is 18 days. Cough it up: The problem with coughing is the discomfort or pain some people feel. Loosen the secretion with lots of fluid or expectorant/mucolytic or even bronchodilator if needed to make coughing easier.
