Sty: A sty is a moderately inflamed "sweat duct" in the eyelid. I tell my patients to get a damp wash cloth and pop it in the microwave for 30 seconds. Test it on your wrist to make sure it's not too hot. Place warm compress the closed eyelid for about5-10 minutes and re-heating as necessary. If it does not get better in a week or gets worse go to your eye doctor. ...Read more

My 3 yr old has what I think is a sty on her eyelid for about 4 months. Is heat compress still worth trying or have it checked?
Depends on cooperati: If your kid will cooperate (bribing is ok), heat is still the best first step. You can make a small warm compress with a wet face rag in a ziploc bag with holes. Toss in the microwave for long enough to get warm & keep on until cool & repeat often.
